Privacy and Terms Pages- Do we Have to?

I just read somewhere that every business website HAS to
have a privacy page and terms page.

I have set up a few wordpress sites for small businesses and have not put these on there...
So my question is, is it the law of the land- do we have to have these two pages on the site?

I understand why it may be helpful to state the policies, I just wondered if legally we HAVE to have them....???

Thanks for any info on this matter.

Mel

What is especially important is making sure there are not clear loopholes in your policies. If none are stated, and then you make lots of sales you can get issues where you have no recourse, or at least nothing to back you up.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Well, Google likes it, so there's no harm in putting up a couple.

Anyway, with the staggering amounts of wordpress plugins we have nowadays, you can even automate creation of privacy & term pages with the right plugin

Well, you don't have to - but if you are selling something it is a wise idea to do it.

Trust me when I tell you that you never know what might tick someone off.

And if you are selling for affiliate commissions, you never know what a company might do to tick someone off.

        Cover your own arse.

I looked around for this same question as well but so far I couldn't find any where it states that its mandatory to have these pages. I guess it makes sense, because its really for your own protection or the owner of the site. Its up to you if you want to protect yourself or not. You are the one who is going to absorb the consequences if any.

    YES!

Google wants you to have a privacy page on your sites, thats why I ALWAYS add them. It also makes your site appear more professional, especially if you also add a contact, about, terms and disclaimer at the bottom.

Inspires much more confidence in a visitor, especially when it comes to providing personal information or disclosing your credit card details.

Any questions just let me know
