Trying to install Wordpress, What do I do next?

I've got my c-panel control panel open in another tab, and I am trying to install wordpress.

I clicked on "fantastico" and it too me to a page that has a list of options down the left hand side.

Under blogs, I clicked on "Wordpress". Wordpress is loaded and now it's asking these questions!!

"install in what domain"? So I entered my domain homebusinessurvival.com

Now it's asking what directory do I want to install in? I don't know. What do I put in the little box? It also says this:

"Leave empty to install in the root directory of the domain (access example: http://domain/).
Enter only the directory name to install in a directory (for http://domain/name/ enter name only). This directory SHOULD NOT exist, it will be automatically created!"

If you leave it blank, it will install it on your home page

    HostGator Website Startup Guide

If you want to be on another page, like example 'blog'

    homebusinessurvival.com/blog

It will show this wordpress account at that link.

So whichever link you want it to show at, you will enter.

    Cheers,
    Mukul

Oh, I see, if I want there to be a blog and a home page, I would put blog in that box.

No your getting confused. This is your domain ok homebusinessurvival.com

Under normal circumstances you will leave that box blank and it will install in the root directory. In simple terms your root is homebusinessurvival.com
so it will install Wordpress on homebusinessurvival.com then just follow the rest of the instructions. When its all set up you can install a theme and blog away untill your hearts content.

To give you an example of when you would install in a different directory as in filling in that box lets say you had a generic website bestwebsitedealsonline . com Well you could create a directory called radios and install Wordpress on that directory bestwebsitedealsonline . com/radios . You could then create another directory called washing machines and install wordpress on that bestwebsitedealsonline . com/washingmachines and so and so forth

Even if you install in your root directory, wordpress will show up on index.php. You can always have your own index.html that will take priority and be your home page.

I am sorry, that's not correct - in the case of WP. (without WP it can work, of course). The reason it will not work when WP is installed: in many parts of the core script WP refers to the INDEX file of the directory where it's installed and if you have there an index.html - it will mess up your blog.

Most servers are set up to show index pages according to this priority list:
      index.html
      index.htm
      index.php
      ect.

Please do not use fantastico!!!! Your not learning anything - your not learning how to upload the files, your not learning how to run the install script, your not learning how to setup a database, your not learning how to connect to the database, your not learning how to edit the config file,,,,,,,.

Keep in mind, updating wordpress is very much like installing it - you upload the files and then run the script for the browser.

Do you even know if you have the latest version of wordpress installed?

When it comes time to update wordpress because of a security fix, are you going to be able to do it?

By using shortcuts like fantastico, your cheating yourself our of some good experience. This experience will serve you well later down the road.

What Kev said is true, it is a good idea to learn how to install Wordpress the "regular" way, but even if you install it via Fantastico, you can still upgrade it in Wordpress itself (the latest versions have an automatic upgrade option).
