Approaching Blog Owners to Be An Affiliate?

Has anyone had luck with approaching blog owners to be an affiliate for your product? I need some new affiliates for a physical product (so can't use Clickbank) and am trying to come up with some ideas on how to get interest in promoting.

There aren't many blogs in this niche but its something that moms would like and there are plenty of mom bloggers. Although many don't know about being an affiliate... any ideas on how to approach them that have worked for you so they know you are legit and they understand it?

    This is tricky, Jenn....most blog owners, if they have any kind of traffic and influence, may not give you the time of day....

    It's all about forming relationships and GIVING though....

    I was able to get a rather noticeable and influential blogger to actually affiliate with one of my products, but, it required nothing short of months of posting comments to their blog....being genuinely interested...and, making a name for myself on that blog owner's blog....I kept him abreast of the development of the project, and even used many of his tricks and tips....

    In a way, I subtly made him a bit of my 'mentor', whether he liked it or not....time consuming, but, if you find the right blogger, they can do ALOT for you....and, it all starts with developing a relationship. Also, do a little research and check out what kind of social media avenues they have established to 'exert an influence'. Are they just collecting emails? Do they have a Facebook fan page? Twitter account?

    The wise and prudent blogger (and one that you would want as your affiliate, of course), would at least be working on developing their presence and influence. The one gentleman blogger I had contacted now has over 40,000+ Twitter followers and some almost 2,000 Facebook fans....

    It's all about who you know...and, what you give to them....

    Very good..thank you! I'll begin to work on building relationships with them so they know who I am and so I can give them some good comments, etc. That is definitely the way to go and is a process that I've begun with some already so thanks for the extra info!

    I guess what I'm really thinking is that there are a ton of bloggers who really don't know about affiliate opportunities really (so its more about starting to educate) and do a lot of reviewing products for free (or just for the free product) but what I'm able to offer them is even better because they will get paid (and I have the disclosure they can use on their site too). I just want to make some people aware of the opportunity...any other suggestions?

    Never heard of buying blog reviews...will check it out. I just need to be sure they aren't against the newer FTC regulations.

      You're right I checked it out and the blog owners do have disclaimers they need to post which was great for me to see. I'm a stickler for following rules! And THANK YOU...this has been a HUGE goldmine for me...have made dozens of great contacts today with your advice through some of the blog review purchase sites and am stoked!!

        One thing that hasn't been mentioned here yet is going the extra mile to find where such blog owners are spending their time to build their business. Blog World Expo, Search Engine Watch, BIG Seminar, AffCon are just a few of the more popular conferences out there. Instead of pitching a blog owner with an email about your product, why not send an email saying you'd like to hook up at an upcoming conference and ask what conferences they'll be attending. I do some deals with people who approach me by email, but the "big" deals happen at conferences in the bar after the seminar speakers are done.

    Relationships are important, but if the blog owner finds your site to be valuable for his or her readers then they'll promote it even without a big relationship. They want to make money just like everyone else. They have a reputation to keep by only promoting quality products. Create an awesome product that can make them a lot of money and that their visitors love and you should be good to go.
