need advice on website

Hello all
My wife and I have been working on a website for over a year. We have tried to correct all the mistakes that we made from the start. The domain name is not keyword rich so that doesn't help. It's my wife's site and she writes all the content. We have made a few sales but not very many. I do the keyword research and try to help by writing some of the articles. We are both confused on what we are still doing wrong. Traffic is up and down and the site still is a pr o. The site has more than one topic but I see sites like this still doing well. If some of you that have been in IM for awhile and making money would look at the site and give us your advice on how to fix our problem it would be greatly appreciated. The url is Women's Home Activities
Thanks so much for the help I just don't know what to do to fix the site.

The good news is I see backlinks. The bad news is they are not showing up with any good keyword anchor text - which you can slip in on your Ezine articles. You are perhaps covering too many topics and spreading yourself too thin. You'll want to rank for one term and then move on to conquer the next.

I feel the site is a bit to wide to look at. I'd bring in the borders a bit.

Also, get an autoresponder and send coupons monthly to subscribers. You can remind them to come back to the site and see what new things you have discovered.

Make the site fixed width rather than fluid. Add a dark, off-page background (or even a background photo or graphic)

Work on improving the look of the theme.

Add lots more photos - people like pictures - and gardening is a great topic for adding lots of photos. Nobody wants to read a wall of text.

The ads in the sidebar are just random ads. Put them amongst relevant content in a blog post.

In fact, for a site like this, I wouldn't use posts. Change to pages and turn it into a more traditional style static site. Then you can take advantage of drop down submenus.

Bring the page menu down from the top and place it underneath the header graphic where people can see it.

The site seems to be mainly about gardening and yet your header graphic show a house??

Put a nice photo of a garden as the header.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

The design of the site has to make people want to stay and read.

ye totally agree with avenuegirl (sorry don't know your name). on the one link that I looked at I noticed that your wifes name was the anchor text.

Find the keyphrase in your niche or rather what someone who would be searching for your site would type into google and run with that, dominate one keyword at a time!

Don't spread yourself too thin! (I hate trying to rank for keywords by the way - too much work )

Well i have seen the site of yours . Site is OK well I can tell to do changes in your site is The Top part in the site must be displayed on top of image. Well you can use flash banners inside your side. Well color combination is not fine . Blue color is too much dark for Fonts.Block you have used in middle part the border must be curved.

Congrats for your site and Good luck !!!!

    Thanks avenuegirl
If you don't mind a few questions. What do you mean by bring in the borders? Another question. Maybe I still don't understand anchor text. If the url is www.website/keyword is that not my anchor text and if I put that in my resource box would that not be the way to do anchor text?
Sorry for so many questions but after more than a year it's starting to get hard to keep motivated.
    Thanks for the help

Thanks so much for all the help
I'm going to copy and print all the advice you all have given. I will have to study wordpress more to make the changes you talk about I'm not techie and we both knew nothing about websites when we started. Rosetrees, the site is not only about gardening my wife was a special ed teacher so she talks a lot about teaching kids phonics and how parents can start teaching young children at home. That and gardening is her passions.
    Thanks for the advice
