Knock down a website?

Is there any way to knock a page down a few rankings? Like say I want the top spot, but do not want someone else to have a similar page directly below me?

    No. I believe this is not possible directly. You are possibly looking at it the wrong way. You would need to look at the 3rd and 4th spots then help these sites gain position 2 and 3. Thus, the site you don't like gets bumped to 4.

    If you believe there are Google 'penalties' which will harm your site's rankings, then that is what you would do. Of course, that's would everyone would do.

    I thought so. I am working on trying to rank a photography site for a friend, but her old "partner" stole part of the name, so they are very similar in google ranks, so I was trying to find a way to separate them a bit...

    You could try to rank subpages on your friend's domain so the results look like

    some title here
    blurb, blurb, blurb

    second title here for subpage
    blurb, blurb, blurb

    title for the old partner's site here
    blurb, blurb, blurb

    Here's an example that shows the above in case it doesn't make sense:
    news - Google Search


    Work on ranking to your summary is more targeted and enticing to the searcher - they'll skim over the old partner's site and click off to your friend's.
