Any Downside to Using .info for e-commerce sites

Hi,

I want to register a lot of domains, for starters 50 domains, and if I get all .com domains, that going to be $500, but if I get all .info, then I spend about $75. Big saving as $ is not so easy now.

My question is, do you think there will be any downside to getting .info domains as against .com? A few points to note is that
- the domains will be affiliate e-commerce sites each targeting one specific niche. Will a .info domain affect search engine ranking?
- Yes i know that .info sites are only $.99 for the first year, and a little under $10 for subsequent years, but this way, I can spend .99/domain and then see what sites makes me money and concentrate on them/be willing to pay more the following year, and can throw away sites that don't make me money.

Thanks all.

To me this seems like backwards thinking. Do some keyword research and you will have a good idea if something is going to work or not. If they are specific to one niche it will be even easier to get this accomplished. Once you have found some solid keywords with available domains then go for it.

There is no concrete evidence that a .info ranks differently than a .com, but there are countless individuals who will tell you their personal experience. A .com is easier to remember and has a higher resale value if you want to try and sell the sites that didn't work out to well.

    "Opinion" differers.

No doubt consumers generally feel more comfortable with .com . net etc.

I've seen no difference at all with .info addresses, they rank just the same but I'm not convinced by the small numbers I've been able to test with as I have colleagues who swear blind .info's seem less effective in the SERPS.

I use to buy .info hoping they would work and saving by paying $1 for the first year. Personally I feel you have to put in more work getting results from them and myself kinda look at .info sites a "throw away" domains so by pass them when I land on a .info site.

Much the same as a .co.cc which is free. I now drop them and rather try and get a .com domain that is keyword reach as it is cheaper and perform better in the long run.

.info have been around for a while now and is still promoted for under a $. I think currently with godaddy if you renew them you pay $5 and get another free. Makes me think as they even battling to get people to buy them or renew them.

Just want to add - for what you want to do buy yourself a 4 letter .com and then push the main domain and add all you niche websites under directories and you will get better results. Some say subdomains and other sub directories but if new then do subdomains. I have the domain 4wpc.com which I want to use for the same purpose.

If you look around you can get 4/5 letter domains on ebay for $20 and some other places such dp forums

Do you have an automated system for building/ranking websites quickly - after your keyword research? If you're auto-blogging, not as big a deal. And a few folks over at WPMage forums are saying .info seems to be working fine.

Otherwise, you'll have a tough time going through the numbers you mentioned. Maybe grab five or 10 .com domains to get going, split-test, etc. If you can find a winner or two, keep building it while trying out another five or ten domains. Rinse. Repeat. Hope this is helpful.

You know, there is a search function available in this forum. That way you could look up the other 276 times this issue has been discussed.

But, the answer is no, it doesn't make any difference with SEO.

If they're for affiliate sites they'll work well for this purpose. If you're wanting to start a branded ecommerce site you'll want a .com for branding purposes (not for SEO purposes).

My feeling is that .info is most suitable for information site. Other than that .info is a very good extension and would rank as any other domain extension and you do not get any special treatment from search engines just because you have .com You still have to work on seo like anybody else does not matter what extension you have.
