Hosting Private Videos On Vimeo

I just signed up for the premium account...mainly because they offer a privacy option so I can apperently hide it completely from vimeo and also choose only the domains I want it to show on...I am still waiting for my vids to upload so I don't know how it will show up.

Just want to know if anybody else is using vimeo for private video hosting and embeding it on their blog/site? and how you like it?

Vimeo has a quality service, but be careful if your videos are used for any type of for profit product. They'll ban your account.

Be VERY careful when dealing with Vimeo. If someone complains that your promoting something commercial it won't take long for them to shut you down. Even if the video is private and a competitor views your video on, say your website and they then go and complain you can get shut down.

I agree. If you're going to use video for something commercial, it's best to go with Amazon web services and host your videos there. It's a bit more technical, but there are plenty of tutorials out there.

May I ask why you are not just using Youtube? I don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but using Vimeo is like walking on extremely thing ice when it comes to commercial stuff. ONE person complained about my video (I know this because the vid only had two views) and I got reported. Not only was the video removed but my account was shut down. I had used the account for filmmaking (my other time-consumption gig) and lost it all.

My fault I know, but I've been on a mission to warn people to not use Vimeo for commercial purposes. They take it very seriously over there...

If you have amazon s3, then you can use JW player to embed your videos. Here's a decent how to video to help:

I'm using JW player w/ amazon S3 on a website here:

Yeah, VIMEO is quiet good for that.

YouTube doesnt allow this, you can SHARE your videos if you set it to private but then your videos will become public automatically.

Stage6.com was quiet good at this but they have shut down since. Dailymotion "used" to be able to do that but not sure anymore. Best bet is to go with VIMEO, they definitely get my thumbs up

If you want to control your own videos, I would suggest using S3 or cloud front services and streaming it from there

I've had my videos taken off vimeo and other sites because of the promotional nature

Hey I just looked at cloud front... didn't know about it so thanks!

However can I embed HD videos with that program? and do I have to buy the pro one to use it?

    Leon,

The perfect solution is Amazon S3 + S3FlowShield plugin to embed the videos and secure them from sharing.

This is ideal for Wordpress membership sites or regular Wordpress sites.

You'll be paying $0.15/gb of bandwidth which is dirt cheap. It also frees up the load on your own hosting server.

Trust me...this is the best way to go for self-hosted videos. And you can make them as high definition as you want. Just keep in mind anything over 720x480 is probably overkill anyways. Be sure to use MP4 files to keep the file size small and the quality high.

And there are plenty other equally (and more) 'perfect' options besides that one (see Viddymatic.com in sig for example)...

The key, Leon, is to grasp just the key basics of web video, and not get too sucked into all the crap that so often goes with it (from a nerdy-geeksville angle).

And yes - with all the major solutions you can use 'MOV' videos as long as they are encoded correctly: and that means making them progressivley streamable (so they start playing as they download) when created, and using H.264 / AVC video compression in your editing/conversion software.

The simple end of the software editing spectrum - something like QuickTimePro (or Camtasia) - makes this fairly painless for exporting web-friendly mov mp4 files.

    Best,
    Adam
