Do You Need To Be In The "Big" Niches To Succeed?

I've been wondering a lot about this lately: Is it possible to make a full time income by grabbing lots of low-competition keywords for more micro-niche products rather than trying to find an ultra high gravity "i know it sells" product? I'm trying to move away from my income being tied to my article submissions per day and into less competitive niches where I can rank my websites more easily... any thoughts?

Thanks!

    Hi Brandon,

I think it is possible and have started a handful of sites just like you mentioned.
One of them, just this last few days, has got to number 1 for it's keyword.

According to MS the term only gets 15 searches a day but the last 5 days has averaged over 60 a day.

I know of a very successful marketer who does exactly as you have stated and he earns over 5K a month from this. He picks terms that get between 35 and 65 searches a day and under 2K competing pages.

I say it can be done. Go for it

I think I would still stick on the low competition yet profitable niches to market since it's so hard to get ahead of those "big" niches especially today that there've been gurus, experts here and there who have been prominent in the market they're in. Since you already have found your niche, here's what you should do next.

I thought I have to quote Yaro Starak's post here which is worth learning, here it is:

    Step Two: Scan For Competition

Once you find a few niches you think have potential search those keyphrases and see what results show up. If the natural search result sites that turn up are badly optimized (look for low PageRank, poor title keyphrases and heading tag keyphrases) and you are confident that a site with well optimized content would quickly jump to the top of the rankings and by quickly I mean about 3-6 months (remember the Google Sandbox is going to impact how quickly you get high rankings) then you might have your first candidate for a niche content site.

I see the reasoning behind wanting to go to small niches, and by
    all means, go for it.

I personally just think you should go where the money is.

I've created 7 micro niche products, and I have 1 competitive product. ...There's a reason why I have 7 of one, and not the other. Of course, my high competitive product makes me money, but I make much easier money in my micro niche products that all together produces more income than I can currently make in my high traffic high competition niche.

For some reason I can not explain, but creating micro niche products is more fun.

Thanks so much for your responses. One of the only things I was concerned about was not having "desperate buyers" but I suppose if you have good information on your site and a convincing email series you might be ok.

The thing to remember (which we all forget) is that even in the micro niches, there are still potentially tens of thousands of people who are interested in what you have to offer. Find out what they want and deliver it to them. As long as you go for the 'buying keywords' in that niche, you can easily succeed without heading into the big niches.

Another way of making those micro niche sales (once you have the product) is to contact people who have a newsletter for that niche. Offer an affiliate program so they can make money just by recommending your product. That way, you don't even need to worry about competing with SEO, as the buyers are already there on the mailing list.
