to get traffic and clicks from the users of the ezinearticle site who stumble upon your article? Or to build backlinks to your article, boost your article in the search engines and then get clicks from search trafffic. Which of these methods is the primary aim of article marketing ?

Both are the primary objectives of article marketing. Some people emphasize one over the other but both work.

I'd say in most cases, the primary goal is backlinks to improve rankings and the secondary goal is to get referrals. If you set up a site and promote it with article marketing, you'll find you get the majority of your traffic from referrals at first. After some time, though, your site will rise up through Google and your stats will show a small percentage of referrals and the majority of visitors coming form search engines.

Primary aim of article marketing is to drive traffic to your website. And this involves everything you've mentioned earlier

For myself, the primary goal is for the quality backlinks. Google loves EZA so if you're trying to rank for "NY pizza shop" having a backlink for that on EZA is a good thing. However article marketing also provides a decent amount of traffic.

Its mainly a 2nd tier activity where you have your content on your blog and its just a smart thing to submit it to article directories as it doesnt take long and can help your business with traffic, sales and extra boost in SERPS/

I think you asked the wrong question.

The primary goal of article marketing depends on you and your own personal goals.

Perhaps you should have asked what the primary BENEFIT of article marketing is.

In that case, there are MANY benefits to article marketing, I can think of 1/2 a dozen off the top of my head, but the two you mention seem to be the most popular in the eyes of most IMers.

Whatever you want from article marketing, remember that it eventually and terminally comes down to sales...not just traffic or CTR.

Every day I check the obituaries. If I don't see my name there, then I know it's going to be a good day!

I guess to improve rankings and for back links. I have not generated lots of traffic with article marketing. If it was for traffic, I would probably concentrate on other methods which take less effort but bring in lots of traffic.

      Allen Graves nailed it.

For me, article marketing is building a brand and name for myself. I could
care less about backlinks, though I know that they are a side benefit.

The traffic, for me, comes not because I have an article out there, per say,
but because I have a name out there and people follow and respect what
      I have to say.

Then word gets around that I write quality articles on the subject matter
that marketers are interested in and it snowballs.

So each person has to look at what the benefits to article marketing are
and see what it is that THEY want to get out of it.

I think the primary goal of article marketing is a little different for everyone. My goal is to bring in clients to my Virtual Assistant business. My secondary goal is to build my membership site... it really helps if you define your goals and do your article marketing in a way that will help you meet those goals.

Instead of one goal, I have multiple primary goals for article marketing. Backlinks and pre selling.

There is a training course here that shows how to write articles like sales pages. These articles have far higher click through than normal newspaper like articles on article directories.

I use it for traffic and backlinking. Once I learned how to do keyword research I no longer had a problem with getting the traffic.

I use articles marketing primarily for getting free traffic and secondarily for getting backlinks. For me article marketing still works and is the most effective form of getting free traffic than other free methods.

    Hi,

I would say both works. but for me, the main purpose of article marketing is to build my subscribers list, and provide them more content once they subscribed. Always remember that even if your article rank high in the search engine and you're getting a lot of backlinks and traffic, if you don't capture their email address, it's useless. If you are hoping to get sales just depending on the traffic and backlinks you're getting, there's a slim hope, but if you want long term business, capture their email address and provide them more. Once they have your trust and once you've built your credibility, money comes in easier.

Articles can be used for varriety of purposed
    - Promoting free knowledge and research
    - Your Website promotion
    - Redirected traffic
    - Getting excellent quality back links

But if you can just focus on the first point that is promoting free information and reader's welfare you're pretty much covering all the other things as well. So please dont create and publish article just for sake of marketing, create valuable, unique and original content. You'll ripe more benefit from that.

I think you need to ask yourself what you're trying to accomplish for your site. Do you need backlinks or do you need traffic. Then make that the primary focus of your article marketing activity. Later on you can always do the other or both.

Personally, my goal would be the backlinks as they will push me up the search engine rankings.

Not sure about others but anyhow, everyone sees it in a different way.
    All the best

That will depend on YOUR goal.

Do you want to sell a product?
Do you want to refer an affiliate product?
Do you want your prospect to fill in CPA offers?
Do you want to build your list?
Do you want to increase targeted traffic to your site?

All these can be done by the traffic that article marketing refers. By establishing yourself as an expert in the field, you will get targeted traffic flowing into your site.

Try thinking in terms of who has a wallet - the back links or the visitors?

    Hope that helps...

Article marketing will always be about the VALUE you are giving to your readers and not by merely targeting on traffic, sales, etc. You're writing because you want them to know your brand and that's how you'll be identified better.
