Looking for tutorial on creating videos!

Hi Warriors!

I want to create a screenshot video similar to the Video Boss's Superbowl Google parody video here:

I plan on using CamStudio for the screenshots and I just got a copy of Sony's Vegas Movie Studio video editing software. Trouble is, I haven't the slightest idea of how to use it or where to begin! I know there will be a learning curve with this, but does anyone know where I can learn to create this kind of video in the shortest time possible? Surely, this kind of project isn't too complex. (I hope!)

I know video is getting bigger and bigger, both for traffic and conversions. And I know I need to start using video (however much the idea of appearing on camera freaks me out). I have a Flip camera and now I have video editing software. Now I just need to learn how to use it!

Thanks so much for all of your help!

Sincerely,
Michelle

Omigosh! I didn't even know this existed. Thanks so much for sharing!

      Couple of quick questions:

      1. Is there a "catch?" Does Google or YouTube put their ad in my video?
      2. I want to create this to drive opt-ins to build my list. Any limits on what I can include, etc.?

      Thanks!

Well, technically you are promoting Google.

          Hi Michelle,

You did the right thing getting Sony Vegas. I am currently learning to use it.

I know it's a powerful program and has a learning curve, but you would be wise to settle in for the long run as it will do everything that these lesser programs can do, and can do it much better.

I agree with Fajeeb that Google only created that strange video maker to promote their own search engine - wise move by them, but lame in contrast to what Vegas can do.

          Here's my advice -

          a) Use the inbuilt tutorials accessed by going to the 'show me how' button on the top menu bar. They demonstrate all of the features and are very helpful.

          b) Don't be scared by the power of Vegas. When you edit video it's non-destructive therefore you just need some clips to experiment with and whatever you do to them will be saved as a new project and the original will stay intact. Therefore, do this - get some clips and try out everything. As you do that, the fog will lift.

Just like many other things (hosting, ftp, photoshop) the initial reaction to the dashboard and the power of the program can be daunting, but don't let this put you off. It's a very intuitive tool and you will perform many typical actions over and over again, and may not use half of the features.

          c) Logically, youtube is rammed with people making free Vegas tutorial videos in order to promote their products. Find someone who's tutorials work for you, and then seek out all of their other free tutorials.

Not only will your questions be answered, you will also observe how these people present their videos themselves.

            Thanks so much ExRat.

I have a lot going on and have spent quite a bit of money. I'm a do-it-yourself kind of person usually and rarely hire out for anything. I'd like to do a viral movie and will probably hire someone to do that for me eventually.

I'm in the process of launching a new company and Web site as well as writing and publishing a book. I'm in overwhelm right now and am trying to stay focused and proceed one step at a time. The thought of learning a new piece of software right now is overwhelming, but I really wanted to at least learn to create some simple videos (both of me and screenshot videos) to market with so I can create videos as needed without always paying someone.

I'm beginning to wonder if I've bitten off more than I can chew though. To me, it would be A LOT easier to write some short reports and record audios with Audio Acrobat. Video just overwhelms me. But I also know video is huge and really is necessary, at least SOME of the time -- especially for my opt in pages.

            Thanks for your help!

              Hi Michelle,

That's precisely where I was at, except the videos are for a client.

Admittedly, I have experience (many years ago) of using a music sequencer program which has similarities to the operation of Vegas (EG the timeline).

BUT - the biggest hurdle is having the confidence and determination to overcome the fear of the complexity. It's like some kind of 'universal lesson' - (excuse the 'mind warrior' nature of that comment).

Once I decided I would crack it regardless of the fear and got stuck in, it became a lot easier - now I see it as a tool that performs quite simple actions, but underneath that it has layers of complexity which can be delved into to do amazing things - IF required.

My point - for a piece of high-end kit, it's well designed because you don't have to be a genius to use it for simple tasks - you just have to overcome that natural fear of complexity. And as I said above, the BEST way to find this out for yourself is to grab a video clip and experiment. It will go wrong about five times, then as you seek to understand your errors, the sixth one will be perfect.

Trust me, and come back and tell me when you have proven me right

                Thanks again ExRat.

I love to learn and have no problem digging in to learn something new. So it's not that. It's just that I have to focus on taking ACTION and I'm doing that -- in a BIG way. In fact, it's so big that I feel like I've bitten off way more than I can chew. For now, I'm just trying to finish what I've started and not get distracted (by things like learning new software!).

But it looks like I'll have to add it to the list and just do it. Personally, I'd prefer to just forget video altogether. I'm not at all comfortable with the thought of appearing on camera in any way, shape or form. But as I mentioned earlier, I know video is an important part of online marketing and it's bigger in 2010 than ever.

                  Hi Michelle,

Well it's important that you create the desire, in order to overcome the humps. For me, I focus on the fact that I can do things better using video - if I were only doing it for the reasons you have given, I wouldn't do it - not least because I would never see it out.

It's worth mentioning that I have no desire to have my ugly mug all over the place. But there are many ways around this - you can do a lot of things with Vegas, including using effects which would appear to be there for 'effect', but in fact can be used to keep yourself a little hidden.

I'm not sure which new blue type effects come as standard, as I think I bought an upgrade, but you can use a variety of effects to make the video appear grainy, or black and white - for example. So by playing with these you could overcome some camera shyness by obscuring yourself a little, while disguising it as trying to achieve 'coolness'.

Also, there's no reason why you couldn't use other methods - for example - say you wanted to create a tutorial, based on words (IE an article) that had a soothing theme to it. You could go and film the sea, waves breaking etc. Perhaps have some sort of soothing type sounds deep in the background, like the actual sound of the sea. Then you could use a variety of effects to make the words appear on the screen - as you read the article out.

This way anyone can watch it without the sound, plus at no point are you appearing, except via your voice.

I'm also going to be using Camtasia quite a bit and it's possible to make videos with a small square in the corner that shows video of you speaking, while the main focus is on the screencam - again, this is slightly better than a full screen talking head video if you are camera shy. So you could apply this to other types of videos, where you simply used slides or landscape video or something else to convey the feeling behind the words, while only appearing yourself in a small box.

                  Just some thoughts.

Thanks so much to Marty S for your tip. I didn't know it even existed. I have now used it to do a quick story promo of one of my sites.

Will this help to increase search engine ranking??

    Regards

Had nothing to do with comparing video production programs you could buy. For the purposes of the OP's question, the search tool is perfect, because you can create it quickly and meta tag it anyway you like.

No matter what video you make, as soon as you put it on Youtube, you are in turn promoting Google, so you might as well get over that nonsense. And are you really comparing Vegas to a simple video making tool?

If you want to compare video production software, Vegas is easily matched by several others on the market as well.
