Is music a good niche?

Hi everyone

I have noticed there is only 1 music item on clickbank with a gravity over 100. There are only another 1 or 2 with gravity over 50!

Yet there are a lot of music products available. Is music more a minor niche or can you do well exclusively in it?

Although my day job is as a training consultant, I am also a very experienced composer and guitarist. I am looking at how I can use my skills to give value in the IM world.

So I guess I am asking is music a profitable niche?

thanks

cheers
Geoff

    depends..

music is comparatively smaller niche ... and most of the stuff is found on youtube if we talk about mainstream music..

if we talk about music production.. the audience is geeky and know very well what they want to buy and what not..

so they don't buy on emotions..

from my experience clickbank is a place where products are sold for emotions and less for the quality and value..

I feel someone can do rather well in the music niche. I recently sold several Les Paul Custom Gibson Guitars Online for $840 a pop and have gotten numerous inquiries about the guitars from potential buyers. These are typically hard sale items as people typically like to see and examine things like this before they buy them.

      Geoff,

Music is certainly a niche with a lot of passionate people, and large numbers of them. The great thing about the internet is that you can make things that are too marginal to work locally work online.

If you can add value with something you obviously enjoy and are good at, you should look at it from that angle. If you are a trainer, perhaps you can find a way to improve upon how guitar or composition is taught, for example.

I'm a big believer in using your strengths which are a natural advantage over just doing something to make money.

You could try the Underachiever method, where you find an affiliate product and promote it to get an idea of the market, then if it converts, create a better product with better sales materials and switch to that.

I would suggest you read "Rework" by Jason Fried and another guy. They created the 37Signals website. They have an excellent approach to marketing and building a business that blows a lot of the rehashed IM ideas out of the water.

I'm involved in a project that should be released soon that may be right up your alley. It's for music composers, and follows a lot of the 37 Signals type approach. We haven't determined the affiliate and JV strategies yet, but if you PM me, I'll let you know when we are ready to roll it out.

Music isn't a niche =/ Music is a huge market... You may need to be more precise when you say music because it is that big. Look at online downloads, they done something like a billion last year and 700million in record sales, thats is just a small fraction of the music market.

    How to write music.
    How to compose a song.
    How to read music.
    How to play guitar.
    Selling instruments.
    Starting a blog.
    etc etc etc

It'a as big a market as you want it to be. Decide what you want to do and then focus on the customer and ask yourself what they want and not what you want. provide what they want, solve their problems and you're on your way.

I think music is a glamor market and thus the competition
is pretty thick because lots of people are attracted to
    glamorous career dreams.

There's also a lot of competition from books and videos about
music, music careers, playing guitar, etc. So when you look
at a $37 CB video course about playing guitar with some
dude you've never heard of versus a $20 DVD with some
rock god teaching it, you see that in niches with a lot of
products your salesletter-driven affiliate product is often
going up against better products at lower prices sold through
    retail channels.

I think logic dictates on this one. Being a muso of some experience myself, I looked at this niche a while back. However, by the very fact that there is only 1 product on clickbank from a guy nobody has heard of tells you a lot. If this was a 'hungry' niche, there would be lots of JVs with past established music business pros, who's royality checks have dried up or become thin. They would be working with marketers endorsing music related affiliate products galore.

I personally have to say: Take another niche. I have a music-addicted website, but better go for other niches....

I have a friend who's had a lucrative career for some time designing and selling her own guitar straps. This is her own niche within music. Being a guitar player and knowing the effects you like/need, tools, equipment used on stage and in recording, perhaps you could create your own niche.

As you build your site you could add your own music for people to come listen to and maybe even find followers who will want to return to hear your latest song or video.

Offer some of your original songs to people that they can add to their own family or friend videos. My band and I have talked about making our own shredder (we are snowboarders and skiers) songs and offering them for free for people to add to their shredder vids. If you don't belong to a band, there are programs you can get to create your music without a band, like GarageBand. Maybe you could think of something similar. In fact, check out Apple's GarageBand site and you might get more ideas for a music website.

Add videos from You Tube to bring traffic and interest. Sell some hard to find concert dvd's. (I'm a musician and our group of friends enjoys watching these during parties.)

The point is that I believe if you love the niche you will find a way to create income from it. The possibilities are endless. Write a list of all the ideas you can think of and add to it as time goes on. But leave ebooks and clickbank alone. Being a musician, my experience shows that we are a more hands-on group that prefers to listen, watch, learn and do.

thanks all for replying to this thread. Yes the query was really around the profitability of the music niche. My feeling is it is very hungry - but as indicated by clickbank results, not sure how profitable it is. My interest is in digital music products such as teaching etc

    thanks again

As a musician myself, the last place I would consider for music products is clickbank.

Just dosen't have the kind of products and services I'm after. That dosen't mean that they don't exist.....

Unless you have a unique angle, information on the Learn how to play guitar, piano etc niches can be found for free all over the internet. (Don't understand why someone would pay for this).

Musicians are VERY passionate about music technology, equipment, instruments etc.

Music is a huge market, with Very passionate buyers. For example, our lead guitarist recently paid over $5,000 on a new guitar, and he now owns a total of 5 guitars. The cheapest guitar in his collection is around $1,500.

I know for a fact he is always looking out for gadgets that enhance his sound, and provide the 'wow' factor to the audience

        Hey, Geoff,

Did you ever do anything with the music niche? As a music lover myself, I'm thinking of giving it a go - I'm a bit tired of trying stuff I don't really know that much about (or even care about, for that matter), just for the sole purpose of making money. But, I know LOADS about music, and, if I can parlay that into making money as well, perfect!
