Is music a good niche?

Music is certainly a niche with a lot of passionate people, and large numbers of them. The great thing about the internet is that you can make things that are too marginal to work locally work online.

If you can add value with something you obviously enjoy and are good at, you should look at it from that angle. If you are a trainer, perhaps you can find a way to improve upon how guitar or composition is taught, for example.

I'm a big believer in using your strengths which are a natural advantage over just doing something to make money.

You could try the Underachiever method, where you find an affiliate product and promote it to get an idea of the market, then if it converts, create a better product with better sales materials and switch to that.

I would suggest you read "Rework" by Jason Fried and another guy. They created the 37Signals website. They have an excellent approach to marketing and building a business that blows a lot of the rehashed IM ideas out of the water.

I'm involved in a project that should be released soon that may be right up your alley. It's for music composers, and follows a lot of the 37 Signals type approach. We haven't determined the affiliate and JV strategies yet, but if you PM me, I'll let you know when we are ready to roll it out.

I have a friend who's had a lucrative career for some time designing and selling her own guitar straps. This is her own niche within music. Being a guitar player and knowing the effects you like/need, tools, equipment used on stage and in recording, perhaps you could create your own niche.

As you build your site you could add your own music for people to come listen to and maybe even find followers who will want to return to hear your latest song or video.

Offer some of your original songs to people that they can add to their own family or friend videos. My band and I have talked about making our own shredder (we are snowboarders and skiers) songs and offering them for free for people to add to their shredder vids. If you don't belong to a band, there are programs you can get to create your music without a band, like GarageBand. Maybe you could think of something similar. In fact, check out Apple's GarageBand site and you might get more ideas for a music website.

Add videos from You Tube to bring traffic and interest. Sell some hard to find concert dvd's. (I'm a musician and our group of friends enjoys watching these during parties.)

The point is that I believe if you love the niche you will find a way to create income from it. The possibilities are endless. Write a list of all the ideas you can think of and add to it as time goes on. But leave ebooks and clickbank alone. Being a musician, my experience shows that we are a more hands-on group that prefers to listen, watch, learn and do.

As a musician myself, the last place I would consider for music products is clickbank.

Just dosen't have the kind of products and services I'm after. That dosen't mean that they don't exist.....

Unless you have a unique angle, information on the Learn how to play guitar, piano etc niches can be found for free all over the internet. (Don't understand why someone would pay for this).

Musicians are VERY passionate about music technology, equipment, instruments etc.

Music is a huge market, with Very passionate buyers. For example, our lead guitarist recently paid over $5,000 on a new guitar, and he now owns a total of 5 guitars. The cheapest guitar in his collection is around $1,500.

I know for a fact he is always looking out for gadgets that enhance his sound, and provide the 'wow' factor to the audience
