Best chair for sitting at a computer for hours?

by 17 comments
My lower back aches if I sit at my computer too long at a time. I am taking breaks
every couple of hours but wonder if there's a brand of chair I could buy that would
help me maintain good posture.

Need to strengthen your lower abs, and stretch your quads and hamstrings. If you can afford it, go see a physical therapist, and they will teach you the right way the first time. You really need to get up more than every couple of hours. More than about 30-45 minutes is too much.

I feel ya. I have added a pillow to my leather chair and it makes a difference.

However, if you want to go the increase your abs and quads method, and can't afford trips to a physical therapist, google Matt Furey and check out his programs. One heck of a workout and you will see results fast.

I created a small thread a few months ago..

see "Ergonomics and a good office chair". I took a WF members advice on one of the chairs (matrix) and its been great.

I've worked from home on the computer for the past 10 years, and 8 years ago I invested about $1k in a custom office chair from a local store specializing in furniture and equipment to relieve back pain. (not an affiliate link: The Better Back Store. Back Pain Relief)

    It's been worth every penny!

I have zero back pain from the long hours I've spent in the chair and would encourage anyone who spends serious time in front of the computer to treat buying a good chair like investing in self-funded preventative health insurance.

You might try an exercise ball - that forces you to sit upright and gives your core muscles a light work out at the same time.

    Yeah, this is true actually.

Another thing that helps is having your DESK at the right level. If your desk is TOO low or TOO high, you'll have these same problems after extended periods.

I agree. A good chair helps, but there is no substitute for strengthening your core and stretching your hamstrings, lower back and quads. I think you would also benefit from reading a book or taking a class on posture alignment.

    Yoga cured my back pain.

I still work from an ergonomically terrible workstation, but I've got no pain.

The thing about yoga is that its subtle so you need to learn from a real expert (more expensive) at first, then you can switch to classes at your gym or whatever (cheaper).

"Short of sitting on a spike, you can't do much worse than a standard office chair," says Galen Cranz, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley.

A lot of good advice here . I use a recliner from lazy Boy and make myself get up every 12 hours ... needed or not .
