What do you think of offering great content for free but only if they register for a free account? And that way I have their emails and can send them updates, etc...

That is actually a model that is followed by lots of Internet marketers Leon.

Even better, you can give your membership exclusively to the War Room or as a free WSO (if it is IM related) and it will get more targeted members in a short period of time.

That is actually a technique used by marketers to increase response rate in their subscribers.

There are many ways to monetize just about anything and the "free membership" model is definitely viable. I'd just recommend that you have a plan in place (to monetize your site/list) before you start spending a lot of time marketing it.

Whether you use a "squeezepage" or some other format, you are essentially offering something of value in exchange for email contact information... i.e listbuilding.

Listbuilding is a great way to make money online so long as you have a plan in place. You want to take good care of your subscribers/members but at the same time, you should start monetizing your list soon after they subscribe.

One mistake I personally made early on, was giving away too much free content for too long. When I finally got around to sending out a promotion for a paid product, my list revolted. (well, not really)

The point is, they had gotten so used to me giving them free content that they resented me for promoting something for profit.

To avoid this trap, I recommend that you promote a paid product within the first couple of emails. That way, those that are "offended" will unsubscribe and you should be left with those that understand that while you are a great guy for giving them freebies, you are still in the business of making money.

    Hello,
this model does work very well you will find that many mass marketers have started out and grown to where they are today with that very same format.

Thats best way start building your subscribers list!
If you have contents to give away what you can do is build a squeeze
page and link it with auto responder.

I would set free level inside membership site, but not all site (content).
Give some good content for free and sell the rest.

This model works very well. I'm actually adding a free level to one of my paid membership sites just to build a monster mailing list.

    Hi LeonT and all,

I plan to start my own membership website too, with an option to upgrade the free membership to monthly paid membership. One question is still in my head, which one works best for contents (which are accessible only by paid member):
    - a paid member can access all contents posted before
    - or he can access just this month's contents
