Blog comment spammers becoming smarter!

Hey guys

How many of you guys have lately looked at a blog comment and thought that the comment can actually pass as a legit comment on the post even though it's slightly off?

It happens to me all the time.

Most newcomers will approve the comments without knowing it was actually automated spam.

Do yourself a favor.

The next time you see a comment that makes u doubt it slightly, copy and paste it into Google and do a search. Then look to see if you get any similarities. You'll be surprised at what you find.

Comments spammers have become smarter in two ways:

1. They spread their anchor text in multiple comments:

They use "Name PartialKeyword" instead of "Name Surname".

For instance, "John Bank".
And later they will leave a comment on another post with something like:
"Alicia Loans" and link to the same url.

Obviously they are trying to get passed the filters by splitting keyword citations which is very smart since Google will pick up on the co-occurrences. Luckily I caught on and so should you!

2. Generic complimentary comments:

These ones slip by all the time.
Stuff like "Dude, that was a good post. Lovin your blog like crazy."
Or "I've just subscribed to your RSS feed. I love your content".

Now the thing is, I don't mind the generic complimentary comments, but I hate it when those comments come with links that go out to spammy sites.

We all want comments on our sites, but we want legit ones.

So next time, keep a good lookout for comment spammers. They are getting smarter by the day.

Cheers!
Reinhardt

Yep, I already see this being posted. It seems like the smart ones do it to get better rankings using the anchor text associated with their links.

For 2 weeks now I am receiving comments like "great post..bla bla bla", "very informative stuff..." and so on, the problem is, most of these comments are posted to my "TOS" and "Contact" pages
If my TOS page is so impressive, you can imagine what they will feel if they read the actual stuff on my blog!

I have definitely had my share of spammers as well. I always delete those comments that I feel do not add value to my site.

Yes, I have found this problem too. Usually, when I fhind this knid of spammers, I tend to put their IPs into the blacklists.

I am very strict with approval of comments. Unless it is specifically directed
to the actual post (citing parts of the article for example) I don't approve it.

I don't care how many legit comments I ax. I'm sick and tired of all the spam
I get on my blog that I have to nuke each day.

If you blog on Wordpress, the Akismet plugin is pretty good for catching virtually all the spam comments, so you don't have to see them.

        Oh this is wonderful.

Guess what I just found in going through my blog comments to approve
        from yesterday?

Somebody is impersonating a member of this forum and posting comments
        under his name.

I almost approved it on sight of the name but then read the comment and
said to myself, "No way would this person make such a poor comment."

I won't mention the person's name but maybe some of you have seen the
        same thing.

        Unbelievable.

Trust me, my akismet is pretty tight.

Akismet won't flag comments that almost look legit. Akismet goes after common spam messages. These new ones slip through easily.

        That is the problem.

        NICE idea!

Get the comments, neuter the spammer!!!

I had taken to just deleting anything Akismet would capture. Perhaps it's time to turn the tables!!!

I guess it's just me but as long as a blog spammers comment looks legit I treat it as legit. I'm not on a crusade to crucify every spammer I come across on the web. If their comment looks legit to me it'll also look legit to the next reader coming along. So thank you Mr. & Mrs. Spammer. I just make sure the link they posted as their website isn't something I wouldn't want associated with my company. My blogs are nofollow anyway so they'll not got any link juice from us.

      Same here

On misconception that many people have though is that by having their blog or site set up as no-follow that the person making the comments won't get any benefit...

      This isn't true.

As an aggressive link builder who speaks with several like minded people daily, I can tell you that I/we will take a no-follow link just as fast as a do-follow - It's a numbers game really, and in the end having a good amount of no-follow or even just http://www.mysite.com links makes it look all that much more natural.

What's the worth of spam comments to you? There is no true interaction.

I see it like this: Some dude is simply crashing on your property taking a piss and others come by smelling it.

      err...comments = updates?

As long as the comment isn't BLATANT by my stuff spam - I'll approve it. If I can get 8-10 "good comments" a day, I'm actually happy with that as it gives the perception to the search engines that there is active dialogue and updates on my site.

      win-win.

I get at least 5 comments a day of the "Really like the Post" or "I bookmarked your blog" a day.

Those don't get approved. Heck I'll let people have a keyword only in the name field if they take the time to write a legitimate comment, which is part of the frustration.

To me at the end of the day I approve or deny comments on a fairly easy to answer question: Does this do anything to add to the quality of my blog?

Even I have experienced the same thing and every day clear out such comments. Some of the comments are so apt that at one time you would not feel that they can be spam.

There are comments such as " I have searched you through Google and found your blog. I must say that you have described the right point," another one was " This is what I have been looking for. Thank you so much for touching this topic, not many can describe that beautifully as you did."

But the only thing which make them caught is the choice of post they put there comment in and highly un-matchable backlink to the post.
