Just checked my Reseller Cpanel and could not get in. Hostgator is down and I can not even get onto hostgator.com

Here is their twitter page

ThePlanet.com - the Houston DC that Hostgator uses has been having network issues on and off for the past few hours, their network went down again around 30 minutes ago, so all servers housed in the DC, including HG servers will be unreachable until the network issue is resolved.

We have a number of VPS's and Hybrids with The Planet and they've just come back online, so hopefully those of you on the HG IP ranges should be back up soon.

@ShawnP, Site5 also house their servers in The Planet DC, so that's why you are unable to reach them.

@JFalcon, The last major DC wide outage at The Planet came when one of their generators (think it was a generator?) exploded, as such they had to take everything offline until the HSE people were happy it was safe to power everything back up.

How does this happen to a "state of the art datacenter"???

ThePlanet Data Center Tour - Quality Host Online

Apparently, "The problem does appear to be a result of a very large inbound network attack targeting this server."

There was some scheduled maintenance planned for yesterday, so perhaps it didn't go as planned, and that's what is causing the problems:

      Dear Customer:

On May 2, 2010, between 12:00am and 7:00am CST, our Network Engineering team will implement a distribution layer in our Hstntx2 network. This is one of many improvements to our network which will provide increased capacity and reliability.

While we've scheduled a seven-hour maintenance window, we anticipate no downtime, however, there will be routing changes as traffic is rebalanced during the turn-up of the new routers.

If you have multiple servers in Hstntx2 and would like additional information about which servers are downstream from this maintenance, you can check your hardware objects in Orbit or contact us directly.

To check the location via Orbit, click "Network" and then "Bandwidth Utilization" (direct link). Servers with "hstntx2" in the location column will be downstream from the maintenance.

If you have any questions about the planned maintenance, please contact your sales representative or our Customer Care Department through our Orbit ticketing system, Live Support chat, or by phone at 866-325-0045.

Things like that do happen so I advise those who are running sales pages and other critical sites that lose money with downtime to consider investing in another hosting account so that you can switch over to the other host ASAP when necessary

MUCH easier said than done. Even if you could easily replicate content/data to another host for redundancy it takes 24-72 hours for DNS propagation.

24 - 72 hours is a gauge but in reality... it's much faster.

eg you buy your domain from godaddy and you host your website at hostgator... and you have duplicated your website at bluehost

when hostgator is down, you just need to go to godaddy and change the name servers to point to bluehost.

I tested it out... Yes it takes a while but It's usually pretty fast.

Looks like I was in the 1% down time that every webhost has.

Hostgator has always been helpful when I have had issues so I do not plan on leaving.

Pretty smart move if you ask me. Definitely will buy another hosting package but clone 200 + WP domains... what a headache.

          Thanks for the headsup mate!

Goes to show just how many use Hostgator. I'm currently looking through clickbank for new products and about half of the sales pages I click on are down. I checked a few of them out of interest and they are all Hostgator. I don't use them myself but for you lot that do, hopefully it will get sorted out soon. This is obviously a big problem so I would think it's a safe bet they are trying hard to sort it out as quickly as possible.

I've no problems at the moment - thank goodness.

Perhaps the problem is only on certain of their servers.

I always use at least two hosting companies in case of problems - but - you have to ensure that the companies you use do not utilize the same servers!

You do not always know where the servers are based with the company you are buying your hosting from. I have had several bad experiences with companies in the US and UK. Even now while I have a very good hosting service in the UK and good communications and support, I bought hosting which was assured to be in the UK but a move to a new server leads me to believe some servers are located in the US. Maybe a good strategy used by the hosting company for eventualities like the one I am proposing.

There is something to be said for following richgrad's advice, though I would also make sure you use reliable companies; one where the servers are based in the UK and the other where the servers are based in the US.

That way your are more insured if there is a serious network problem of always having your sites back on line quickly, especially when the network might be down for an indefinite period.

I was asked who I would recommend in the UK. My sites are hosted with www.tophostinguk.com

Having said that i noticed D9hosting in an earlier post in this thread and had I not found the company I am with now D9hosting was next on my list to try so knowing they are a good hosting comapny I would also recommend them

      Thanks so much David.

I've been using UK2, but about 2 months ago - things fell apart. Things have since improved, but I think it would be wise of me to move to more reliable host.

      I'll check your recommendations out.

    From hostgators blog:

    Gator Happenings
Well, it’s been quite a month here at HostGator. We had what we thought at first was a very cruel late April fools joke played on us. HostGator purchased a 102,000 Sqft building in Austin, TX as we have simply ran out of space here in our 4 story Houston headquarters. There are cubes on top of cubes it seems here and we are now finishing up construction on our 3rd, yes 3rd addtional parking lot! We were set to close on the new Austin building April 20th, at that time we sent our money to the mortgage company and waited on our bank to send the remaining amount (4 Million USD). The mortgage company received OUR money, however our bank seemed to have sent 4 Million to an unknown source… April fools!?!? I’m proud to say we’ve since figured out “the case of the missing 4 million” and our office building in Austin is now secured. Blog post about the entire issue is in works, so stay tuned.
