Comission Junction - Tax

Hey there guys,

Just signed up as a GoDaddy affiliate, via CJ.

In my confirmation email it said:

In order to complete the payment information required for your account, you must login to the CJ Account Manager and complete your tax information by filling out and submitting one of our electronic tax certification forms (Account>Administrative Settings>Tax Information).
So, I take it I cannot earn any money with CJ until I fill out my tax details.

I wonder, is it possible to go ahead with the ads, see how it goes, and enter the tax details at a later date?

If i remember correctly you can BUT you will NOT receive your earnings until you fill out the required info and it could lead to a delay in your payment.

Why would you wait to complete your tax information? - they only use it to 1099 you if you make more than a certain amount ($600 per year, I think). It doesn't cost anything to complete the form.

I don't know if you can "test the links" - but it's not the links you need to test - the links work, and CJ is very reputable - they always make timely payments. Its your site you need to test.

I would suggest just getting your application and information all complete with them and then focusing on driving targeted traffic to their offers.

Thanks for all the replies. My situation in this regard is potentially difficult. I have had recurring health problems for a number of years and am currently on disability allowance here in Ireland.

My plan since I got into this MMO thing was always to get some earnings as extra pocket money, until the point where it matches my disability allowance and allow me to come off it. It takes a long time and a lot of red tape here to get onto disability allowance so I have no intentions of giving it up until I have regular income and/or improved health.

Apparently it might be best for me to look into my local laws and speak to citizen advice here. I believe there are a number of "back to work" type schemes which don't put ones allowance in jeopardy.

I wonder if anyone here has been in a similar situation.

As always, the mandatory disclaimer: I am not a lawyer and don't even play on on TV.

I guess your situation - regarding taxes and the form - might be similar to mine: we are both not US citizens and we need to fill out the right form just to let them know not to withhold taxes at the source because we pay taxes in our own countries. This is to avoid the double taxation between countries that have such agreement.

Which also implies, at least for me, that I will report that income on my tax return, just as I report any sales via Paypal, cheques from US companies and organizations etc.

I know we don't like it... but if you make a $7 sale through PayPal as internet marketer - it's part of your income and you have to report.

Now, in most countries when you receive disability-related payment there is a limit that you can earn on the side without putting in danger that status.

You will need to get the right information from your local authorities.
