Christmas already...?

Nope.

But I can't tell you how many years I'd wished I'd started 'prepping' for the holiday season earlier than I did - which was usually around September.

If you're planning (or hoping) to take advantage of the holiday season, be it affiliate sales of seasonal products, your ecommerce store, etc., than you would be well-served to start planning.

September (or October...) isn't the time to first start trying to get your Kindle/LCD-TV/Holiday-Weight-Loss blog in a good SERPs position.

Good point, bfas. The sooner you get your sites up, the better established and positioned they'll be when people start looking for 'em.

Here's another tip for folks who do seasonal stuff...

If you're doing any SEO/content stuff, then you'll want keywords that people will actually search for. Problem is, most of the keyword tools just display results from the last month or so. And that means if you're trying to optimize your content for Christmas keywords this summer, you really don't have a sense of what people will be searching for come fall.

The solution -- collect keywords all year round. Every month, make a list of your seasonal keywords. For example:

    Thanksgiving
    Easter
    4th of July
    Christmas
    New Years
    Chinese New Year
    Hanukkah
    Super Bowl
    March Madness
    Halloween
    Summer activities (swimwear, vacations, etc)

    ... and so on.

Collect the words every month, so that NEXT year when you're optimizing, you know exactly what your market will be searching for.

For example, next summer you can optimize for the Christmas words you discovered your market searched for in the fall of 2010.

Of course that's the long route. I believe there are keyword tools that show you long-term results (like a year's worth of searches), but I'm not up on those tools as I'm not an SEO expert. If someone knows which tools do it, post 'em here... thanks.

    Cheers,
    Becky
