Is Moniker a gonner? -- and a domain name buying question...

I tried to log into their site last night -- got a maintenance message.

Today, it's still not up -- and the message is different. Were they bought out by another company?

Anyone know?

I always used them to check a domain name's availability -- because I heard it was *SAFE* to do that on their site (ie: NO ONE looking at my searches 'from the other side' AND they do not play the netsol GAME of grabbing temporary rights to names that are (merely) SEARCHED for(!!))

Anyone know of any other site that is COMPLETELY *SAFE* to seach for name availability -- even if you cannot immediately BUY the name at that moment?

Please advise.

Thanks!

I always wondered about that bs, if registrars could see your searches and/or temp grab names that seemed interesting. I still don't know the full of it but you just made me think about it again.

As for Moniker, sorry, can't answer your question directly but I was never comfortable with "Monty" to begin with. I had some domain names with some potential problems attached, (TM Infringe), I didn't mean it at the time, it was early on in my online life and I just didn't think twice about it. He told me he'd gladly talk to the company and see if he could arrange for them to "buy" them from me. He said they do that every once in a while, en masse, as it was cheaper than chasing hundreds of them around in court.

He kept putting me off, never getting back to me, telling me to hang on, "he was working on it" and just never came through to even say he couldn't help... so, I never liked them, anyways,

That's exactly what a select group of ICANN members do. It is called domain tasting, happened to a client of ours some time ago.

I use GoDaddy...I go in and search for names and add them to my purchase list. Then when I am ready to purchase I can go through and remove those I do not want. When I find a name I need to do a little more research on or get OK from a partner or client I just keep them in my shopping cart until I am ready to decide.

Of all registrars I've used over the last decade, Moniker is the registrar I trust the most.

    They are back online now...
