Using Specific Colors In Your Web Design Process

I always knew that using specific colors could help with your website. Certain colors provoke certain feelings in people...yet could be different across cultures.

Anyhow, I ran across this relatively short 5 page article that explains the science behind colors and which you should use for which type of website/niche.

Enjoy!

I'm going to leave my theme the way that it is for now, but I confess to not being in love with it even though it was designed for AdSense. This will be useful if I ever decide to change it, though. Thanks!

The psychology of color is very interesting.

It's interesting the black signifies power, sophistication, contemporary style but also death, and morbidity.

White signifies purity, innocence, cleanliness, truth, but also death in Chinese culture.

I wonder what that says for sites with black backgrounds and white text?
I find them very unattractive, difficult to read and leave the site as quickly as possible.

Most of them are deliberately going for the "underground" audience - metalheads, goths, punks, hackers. Occult aficionados. Vampires and would-be vampires. These audiences skew young and have a morbid fascination with their own mortality, since they're not fully convinced of it yet.

Because dark bleeds into light, a site with dark background and light text needs to use a larger font and is usually better off going sans-serif. Most of the people using these colour schemes just play with the colours and think it's fine.

One of the better fonts to display in a light colour on a dark background is Arial Black. The heavier stroke weight really helps it stand out. Of course, you'll screw with the non-Microsoft folks, who won't have it... but if you think that's a plus, you could deliberately give Mac users a really terrible font so they stay off your site.

  • Wow... I knew color was important for many things, including the mental development in infants and toddlers, but I did not realize it also had an effect on how people view a website. This is great stuff... not that I do any of my SEO or blog creation, my husband does that.

LOL - nothing to do with color, Rich.

I just thought it was interesting. I am creating several new websites and found this on a "website color pallette generator" site.

Believe it or not: when I started IM the very first thing I studied with my wife was color theory.

Here's one of the first guides I read: Color Matters - Design and Art - Color Theory

IM'ers should have this in their bookmarks.

Allen, when Marlon Sanders was releasing his "Design Dashboard" (think that's right. If not sorry Marlon), he had a companion report with it that went into pretty good detail about colors and how they related to different niches.

It was full of examples too.

I got tired of looking for it on my discs. I could have sent you a copy. Hard to find when you can't remember the name of it though LOL

You could send him a pm and see if he is still giving it away somewhere.

I do not worry about this too much because my entire website almost is text and pictures..I tend to go with dark blue or green table colors and it works okay. I think it's most important to have readable text for your content I use black text on white bg still

      Allen,

Thanks for the link. I think it depends on the market you're looking to attract and what results you're going for.

Whenever I get the desire to spend lots of time and/or money on some flashy web design, I take another spin to the great Jim Straw's site.

After that, the urge normally passes.
