Think Like A Buyer, Not an Internet Marketer

I recently had a huge 'aha' moment I want to share with everyone.

When I was a software designer we used a process called "use cases" to only build features into software that the intended user was actually going to use - and eliminate a whack of features that would rarely or never be used. It sped up the design cycle and made it much more user focused.

"Use cases" are sort of a story how a person achieves their goal. It includes all the possibilities/branches.

When we would build a website, those goals would be things such as, "Find Information about Product XYZ, Order Product XYZ, Contact a Staff Member for More Information, etc."

Then we would build the software, including all forms and actions the business already used to let the customer achieve those goals. In other words, we automated the actions the business was already doing.

It is a super efficient way to develop multi-million dollar software (we would have 12 projects on the go at once with this method).

I don't know why I forgot to apply this to IM.

When I am researching niches, I have been going about it all backwards. I am looking for terms that are searched a lot but not too competitive. I then find a couple related products I think people would be interested in. Sort of a shot in the dark just like adding 50 features to software just in case someone may want it someday.

Wow, what a mistake that is.

I should be thinking just like a buyer.

I should be finding a really good product and work backwards on how the potential customer finds it and buys it.

I've tried it on a great affiliate product. I asked the guy to go on faith and give me a copy of the book to review. He reluctantly did and I was happy because I can now see the target buyer and be able to write the story of how they find and buy it.

I will update results as things go forward.

This is very true, but it's nothing we haven't heard before. There's actually a REALLY great post about a marketing plan revolved around this idea... must be in the War Room...

Always remember that you are not your customer. If you give them what they want, they'll keep coming back. You just have to make sure it's what they want.

What amazed me about this in that the fortune 500 company I contracted for RARELY performed a marketing analysis to determine if the market wanted what they were offering until we were already into the project with 30 team members piling up the hours. Some of these projects were 10,000 man-hours into it before we really even defined the targeted user. That equated to about a half million bucks before they asked themselves, "who are we making this for".

How the projects usually were assigned was that each department that had a customer contact point would come up with an idea based off talking to two or three clients and that department's manager would randomly think of a solution. We would be tasked with writing up a request for project and eventually the software would begin being built. Part of that process then involved the marketing department getting their clients ready to "accept" our product.

      Ack! So backwards!

One project was so top secret that we were actually not allowed to interact with the potential customer until it was ready. 99% of the features were guessed at! It accounted for nearly 120,000 man hours because of this secrecy.

I didnt really learn these marketing lessons till I had my own businesses and began to realize, "Why would I pay a half a million bucks when I could have had a better idea what the market wanted with a very simple survey and keyword search."

I really think all fortune 500 companies should have an IMer on staff just to show them WHO their customers really are.

I have no agenda but to help those in the same situation. This I feel will pay the bills.

This is the exact same reason why I believe it's so much easier to sell to people when you are your target market.

Others disagree, but it works for me!
