Depends on what type of video you want to create.

Screen capture: You can use screenr.com or Camstudio (Camtasia is way better though)
Movie / promo videos you can use windows movie maker (Cyberlink Powerdirector 8 paid version is better)

As far as I know, the most popular video softwea are:
    1."Camtasia Studio".
    2."Windows Media Encoder".
    3."Quick screen capture."
    4."Super Screen Capture".

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish but here is my toolkit for making videos:

    1. CamStudio for capturing my screen to video. (Or portions of my screen)
    2. Audacity for working with audio tracks I'm putting into my videos.
    3. Windows Movie Maker for combining my screen captures, pictures, audio, and voice narrations.
    4. OpenOffice Impress for creating presentations I capture with Camstudio.

All of those are free and easy to use.

If you are recording from your own camera, then you can still use the above programs to work with adding titles, effects, and audio.

I agree with KansasDragon (for a PC anyway), for Mac (in case a Mac user finds this thread!), you have:

      1. The latest version of OSX (Snow Leopard) can record the screen
      2. Garagband (free with every Mac) can edit audio (you can get Audacity for Mac too)
      3. iMovie (free with every Mac) can edit video

You can also use Google Docs presentations on any machine for making presentations to capture.

On a PC, Windows Movie Maker may seem simple, but it's powerful enough for what most IM'ers need.

You can use the free windows movie encoder to capture the screen.

Make Videos By Capturing Screens with Windows Media Encoder

And then use Windows Movie Maker to edit and compile your movie.

Most public video sites accept WMV files and they are quite small.

You can embed the files using this code if your audience is using Windows mainly.

How to Embed Windows Media Files.

If you want to reach a wider audience convert to MP4 and use a similar embeding technique.

    The same to you.
These days, I am also looking for a useful video software to create some marketing videos to promote my blogs.

Yes, Camtasia is one of the best for recording what's on your screen and creating presentations of demos of digital products and so forth. There is also free software online.
