Our Industry as We Know it - Where did it All began ?

Hi,

We all know that the online advertising industry is here since the internet began,

But our industry as we know it today, with product launches and information products and JVs and affiliates and SEO and all that ...

How did it all start ?

i searched online and all i found is the history of online advertising,

But can somebody give me a brief summary of how did the affiliate marketing and the information business went from nothing to what it is today ?

Was there any remarkable mile stones or it's just a snow ball kind of thing ?

    I can tell you how the SEO industry started in the UK because I was working for one of the first companies here to offer it as a service.. and it wasn't called SEO at the time.

    It started out of the yellow pages.. a sales team going through A-Z phoning companies to pitch them a website and then upsell 'top placement on yahoo and alta vista'.

    Very few companies knew what the Internet was.

    All the SEO guys had to do was keyword stuff and got results back then.

    We all know that the online advertising industry is here since the internet began,
    Sorry but that is not true. The "internet" started back in the 1960's as a military application to maintain communications. It took 30 years before commercialization and "advertising" began in the 90s and there was a real push back by a lot of people to keep people from selling goods over the internet. It was the "world wide web" based on top of the internet that really began the commercialization aspect since you could now "see" the information that was being shared. And that was supposed to be a sharing of information as well only in a more visual aspect.

    Of course us "wanna make money types" ruined a good thing according to some.
