Any HostGator user here? A question for you...

What does Unlimited Bandwidth mean if I read this in the TOS?

8.) Bandwidth Usage
You are allocated a monthly bandwidth allowance. This allowance varies depending on the hosting package you purchase. Should your account pass the allocated amount we reserve the right to suspend the account until the start of the next allocation, suspend the account until more bandwidth is purchased at an additional fee, suspend the account until you upgrade to a higher level of package, terminate the account and/or charge you an additional fee for the overages. Unused transfer in one month cannot be carried over to the next month.

I am considering buying the Baby Plan but found the above in the Terms of Service Terms of Service. Confusing?

Well, unlimited bandwidth doesn't mean unlimited bandwidth. It means that many users won't exceed the secret limit. I however, managed to put a strain on their resources a couple of times. I was told politely that a couple of chron jobs were using too much bandwidth and I fixed the problem, so there was no problem. You'd have to have an awful lot of traffic or use a lot of autoblogs pulling in a lot of posts or some chron jobs, etc. to go over the limit.

e-Business24-7.com - Amazon and Wal-Mart Pays You for referrals!

You've been around for how long? since 2003 and ......... well, unlimited is not unlimited. It's a proportional representative of "all of the users on the ip address" / shared server, basic package, how many other users are on the same ip address?

What kind of site are you thinking of using on the hosting provider?

Baby crock is for baby users, i.e. mini sites, add on domains, low traffic.
If you need more than that, then you would be better to go with a resellers account or a vps.

One of the best ways to find out is to ask Hostgator themselves. They have a really good helpdesk system.

This "unlimited bandwidth" is a scam in my eyes, the FTC complains about people using force claims in a monetary sense, why aren't they slapping these hosting companies left right and center. As you now know from above, it is limited and it's a complete joke.

            Amen!

There is a definition for LIMITED and a different definition for UNLIMITED. Those 2 works are not interchangeable!

Don't sell me on unlimited when the TOS said there is a "secret" limit.

Those clauses protect 2 people. Hostgator and the other customers on the server you are using.

If one user has a few sites that get a moderate amount of traffic... why should their site be extremely slow just because 1 or 2 users on the server are hogging all the bandwidth? It shouldn't.

While I don't agree with how it is advertised as unlimited... it certainly protects the majority of users from a few abusers. If they need that much bandwidth they need a dedicated server. It should be advertised like the dedicated servers are advertised... with a set amount allotted for bandwidth.

You are sharing resources. You don't own them. That is why it is called shared hosting. In reality you need to manage the resource hogs on your own hosting account. If you are using a lot of video content, downloads or anything else that exhausts a lot of bandwidth, then you need to consider putting the load elsewhere like Amazon S3.

I would NEVER use HG again. I've had nothing but TERRIBLE experiences from them.

After switching, my issues stopped and I've a much better experience.

My understanding is that they allow you a set number of simultaneous processes and a set percentage of cpu usage. You can use an unlimited amount of bandwidth as long as you don't exceed the above mentioned.
