Godaddy warning: Auto backorder

I have been buying a lot of domains during the years, it's an addiction really

I have been using godaddy without any problems but they are getting more and more annoying. The latest "trick" is freaking me out, makes me pissed to be honest.

Lets say you want to see if domain.com is free, it's not.
You then find out that the .org version is free and add that to your shopping cart. You then go to order and they have actually added Backordering for the domains that was taken (domain.com), automatically! You have to remove it from you order, which you didnt order in the first place.

Can't believe that is actually legal.
They just add stuff to your order without your knowledge, you have to catch it during the Order Review process.

Got tricked ones to buy a Backorder which I have zero interrest in, didn't pay close enough attention to the order review page.

Anyway, just a small warning

I've had similar things happen with godaddy and I called them and explained that I felt "tricked," and they removed the charge.

I used to buy my domains from godaddy and that's one of the reasons why I transferred them all to a different domain registrar.

Yeah, there's a reason that a domain registrar/hosting company can afford to buy SuperBowl Ads......their automatic packaging of services and jamming of add-on products definitely rakes in the coin.

I agree it's totally annoying though.

Not sure about this as I purchased a domain 5 minutes ago. I searched for the .com which was taken and then selected the .info and completed my purchase. You must have added it to you cart somehow.

If you know nothing about buying domains or internet marketing in general, and you live in the US, you've likely seen Godaddy ads on television and of course the internet so it's the first name to pop in to your mind. That's why I used them at first to buy my domain names. I now go with namecheap. Much simpler, more straightforward and they do a better job and are not over the top with their hard sales. Comparable prices, as well.

Nope, I have tested it several times.

    Do this:

    1) Domain Names, Web Hosting and SSL Certificates - Go Daddy
    2) Type "colorado-doctors.com" in the big domain search box on the frontpage (incl .com)
    3) It says it's taken.
    4) Check one of the alternatives (ex. colorado-doctors.org). Add that one to cart.
    5) Both has been added to your cart, backordering and org version.

Would love to go with namecheap but moving 100+ domains at ones is kinda expensive imo

You're only charged for what you order. True enough they have many OTO's and upsells going on when you purchase domain names but that doesn't mean you're charged for what you didn't order.

And every one of Godaddy's customers know that ..

    Al.
Ye ye, I'm just one of those angry Godaddy customers right? This is the first time I'm posting any negative about them, for a period of about 10 years, I know how they operate but this is something new.

I'm not talking about the normal up-sells that you can choose from after selecting the domain(s) you want to buy, the Backorder is added automatically to your order before all that.

I'm used to just cancel/pass all the additional offers and expecting to pay only for the domains I select and nothing else - thats the problem, they add this into your shopping cart without any action from your side, they just put it in there and you need to remove it (if you notice it).

Lets say your selling an ebook for $17 and the customer click your buy button and is taken to the billing page. On that page you add an additional book for $17 without a warning, which he is going to pay for, unless he notice and removes it.

    But whatever.

One more thing you need to watch out for is the number of years the domain gets registered by default. It is 5 years at Godaddy. I do agree that it is not something a lot of people will fall for unless they are in a hurry.

Not in my case, the default setting is 2 years when I register.

Btw, I was on the phone with a GoDaddy tech last night for over an hour and a half while he and another behind the scenes guy helped me sort a technical issue out that was beyond my capabilities. I'm a wizard with HTML, but PHP is completely out of my league.

My project would have stopped dead in its' tracks without his help. I can't tell you how grateful I am they sorted it out. The problem was on my end, not theirs.

It seems everybody loves to bash GD but I often wonder if they are just mirroring their own shortcomings.

    Hi,

I like to use WHOIS privacy and occasionally I used to buy domains through Godaddy. First year had WHOIS privacy free - but then the second year they charge $10.

Worse thing is, try sending an email to yourself through the privacy system and it never gets to you...

The other thing with Godaddy is everything your purchase is set to auto-renew using your original CC details. You have to search through their control panel and find the auto-renew section and turn everything off. If you've never seen that before I promise you that page will scare you :0)

In the end I switched to Netfirms.com - they have free whois privacy and their dashboard is really easy to use for multiple domains.

    Cheers

    Max
