I am new to IM, I have read up a lot in the last few months and have tried to educate myself as best possible I am useful with computers, I am trying to target products and build some micro niche type sites, I have put up 2 so far, the first is on in position 7, the 2nd is way back. I have learned a lot from the mistakes on the first 2 sites and I have set myself targets to get 10 keyword and then build 10 sites. I am using Micro niche finder and MS and google keyword tool for extra keyword ideas and their searches, I basically want to get keywords in the domain name in .com, .net or .org with at least 3000 local US searches and either 3 PR 0 or N/A on the first Google page and CPC on Spyfu of no less than 50cent or no less than $1 on MNF . I am finding it impossible to find any keywords. I spent the last 2 days searching and found nothing; I am basically searching for 3 word long tail words or maybe even 4. I am tying to search in areas for words that I have not heard of or to keep to words that are not to popular, I have searched cable connections metals I have never heard of, but it seems like every domain I search on MNF is taken. I hear people saying there are so many free niches available. Any ideas on what I could do to improve on my keyword research. I am not bothered if it takes time as I want to get it right from the start. I am just getting a bit frustrated and maybe need a few tips on what I am doing wrong.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated

Thank you

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, especially since you make it a point to conduct tests, analyze your results, study what you're doing right and wrong and learn from your experience then use that knowledge to improve your keyword research further...

...as for me, this is what I do:

    Niches

I've done some research, and reputable sources as well as my own research and analysis points me to these niches:

    1) Recession
    2) Green Power
    3) Senior Market
    4) Discount Retail
    5) Education
    6) Parental Outsourcing
    7) Health and Wellness
    8) Texas
    9) Affordable Alcohol
    10) Pets

    Microniches

I then try to come up with 2 microniche ideas under each niche with high online buyer activity. That translates to a lot of research time and careful analysis.

    WordTracker

I at this point will place each niche and microniche pair in WordTracker to generate keyword ideas. From my tests, WordTracker is better in generating keyword ideas than the Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

    Google Adwords Keyword Tool

I'll place all generated keyword ideas under each niche and microniche pair from WordTracker in the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to validate CPC, local and global search volume as well as most recent search volume. I'll take keywords with high online buyer activity, high online viewer ad click activity, high local monthly search volume, high global monthly search volume and with high recent search volume.

Competition, Affiliate and Target Market Research

I'll Google each keyword and get the PR of each page on the 1st 10 results; the number of backlinks pointing to each of those pages; the age and PR of the domains where the pages are found; the PR of the pages with backlinks pointing to those page results; if there are any exact search domain in the top 10 results and if there are any, the PR of the page and the domain's age and PR; analyze what they're doing right, wrong, similarly and differently from each other; analyze where the bulk of their traffic is from; compare my findings with my keyword research data; and find out where my target market hangs out.

I'll study the data I've collected, target the keywords with competing pages on the 1st results page which I can outrank, then come up with moneytization ideas, marketing, traffic generation and action plans.

A useful exercise that I like to do sometimes that has proven helpful to me to get the creative juices flowing is to go to Google's keyword research tool, and start by typing in a very broad, general term. Then scroll down the list that comes up, and find a more specific term. Copy that back into the search, and repeat. You'll find some interesting keywords that you may not have thought about. That is sometimes helpful in helping me find new niches and keywords.

Hope that it helps. Have a great day!

Google Keyword Tool practically tells you how many searches and how much competition they is for a particular keyword. Good for deciding which niche can work under current circumstances.

You can use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to determine the local and global monthly search volume, CPC rates, and recent monthly search volume of your keyword ideas.

Some just use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to get a list of keyword suggestions after placing a broad niche keyword, but I for one don't use it for that since I only use it to get numbers.

I use my own research and analysis to generate niche and microniche ideas, then I use WordTracker to generate keyword ideas from those niche and microniche ideas, then I use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to get numbers.

At that point, I get the keywords which would be good to target based on my own ideas about high online buying activity, high online viewer ad click activity, high local and global monthly search volume and high CPC rates, but that doesn't stop there since I need to know the PR of the top 10 pages competing for those keywords on Google's 1st page (after Googling without quotes since I need to check the strength of what I'll be aiming to outrank if indeed doable), and sometimes I also need to know the PR of the domains where those top 10 competing pages are found, the age of those domains, the number of backlinks pointing to those competing pages, the PR of those pages with the backlinks and sometimes the PR of their domains, and I often find out the way those top 10 competing pages have been SEOd, what they're selling, what they're doing, what is being talked about there, what people find or do there, etc.

I don't believe there's such a thing as an end-all-be-all step-by-step guide to effective niche, microniche, keyword and competition research which would lead me straight to keywords that could make me earn big bucks by following a most likely non-existent end-all-be-all SEO strategy.

What I do believe in is constant research, testing, analysis, development, research, testing, analysis, development, etc. since the SEs don't have static codes, but I reckon a static clue would be relevance since that's most likely what they're aiming for: to provide the user with the most relevant, useful and updated results.
