Should I get the iThemes Builder?

Hello everyone,

In the next few days, I will be buying a new WordPress theme. I was going to get the Blogging Success Theme by iThemes, but it was recently discontinued. With that said, I was looking at purchasing the iThemes Builder. Is this a good choice? or should I go with something else? Some feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gordon

    I like Artisteer.

The fact that the Home license allows me to sell my themes made it a no-brainer for me.

It says the following on the iThemes Builder site:

Multiple Use License – use on as MANY personal and client sites as you want!

So does this mean I can sell the theme? I would like to flip some of my blogs down the road.

As I understand it, the answer is yes.

I do my research before purchasing, so I am reasonably sure that I found that the answer was yes, since I bought it! LOL

        OK... I went and looked;

        Artisteer FAQ

Can I resell or redistribute exported Wordpressâ„¢, Joomla!â„¢, Drupalâ„¢ and Web Templates?

Yes, as long as you do not include Artisteer photo objects within your header (Header -> Foreground Photo), as those photos are licensed from a 3rd party only for your own use or in your consulting work. You may re-distribute any other designs you create, including those with Artisteer header background photos (Header -> Background), glares, page backgrounds and other provided graphics, and your own photo objects. NOTE: The above restriction applies only to templates created for sale. There are not restrictions on creating individual web designs and templates for yourself and your clients.
I either create my own headers or use client provided headers so the Artisteer photo objects restriction has not been an issue for me.

I also like the fact that I am creating the theme on my computer and then uploading it to the WP installation in question. I have been known to upload several versions at once and then working with the client to decide WHICH theme best meets his/her needs...

You can't sell just the Theme by itself. You can use it to build sites and then sell the sites with the theme as part of it.

(That is how I understood the Builder rules)

The only thing you need to be aware of is this statement on their Buy Now page on what is included in the price:

"One Year of Support and Updates"

I have used the Flexx Theme and my year of support was to end tomorrow. With a 25% off coupon, the cost for one additional year of support and updates would have cost me $150. Without this payment, not only will I not be able to get updates but I can't even access the support forum.

Some themes, like Thesis, include lifetime upgrades. I would suggest you shop around for those which include upgrades, or at least be aware of it before your purchase.

            Best of luck to you!

Actually, iThemes releases it's themes under the GPL as it is listed here:

          WordPress › Free WordPress Themes

(This includes the CSS and images per the rules of this page which people try to use to work around and still call their themes GPL)

If you read up on the GPL anything listed under it gives the user the same rights as the original creator. So, technically, he could resell the theme if he wanted (unchanged). People need to actually read up and educate themselves as to what they are buying because they may be able to do more with it then they think.

Builder is a pretty awesome theme to work with. It's code is really clean, it is super flexible and the support (if needed) is good too. You can create a LOT of different layouts and looks to sites.

    Great choice.

The Builder theme is in my opinion one of the most flexible and useful themes out there (along with Thesis).

Plus with all the child themes that are being developed and distributed for free along with the multi-site license (which allows you to flip the sites), it's a no brainer.

I liked the Flexx theme... but didn't like not being able to control aspects of the sidebars. The builder theme eliminates this by creating whatever layout you want. I remember reading on Wordpress.org several months ago about the next wave of WordPress being all about the framework and not so much about the theme itself. iThemes Builder is a small preview of things to come in the next year.

It says specifically on the site that the themes can not be sold as templates. That would refer to selling one theme to many and selling turnkey sites where the domain is not sold in the package.

Besides... don't listen to anyone on this forum and take it as the law. Contact iThemes to find out what they will allow exactly. It is always better to get the info from the source and not 3rd parties.

I just finished setting up a blog using the iThemes Builder. With that said, how do I export the style/layout of the theme? I would like to use the same setup on all my new blogs.

      Thanks in advance,
      Gordon

I don't have the iThemes Builder. If I did I would be more than happy to help you. Your best bet is to make use of the iThemes support forum.

I was not able to login earlier, so I will try again when I get home. In the meantime, hopefully a fellow Warrior can help.

          Thanks,

Builder is super cool and one of the easiest themes to use for creating custom layouts. If you plan on building many sites and you like creating unique layouts with different widget sections on different pages AND posts, Builder is the way to go.

However, I'm not a big fan of Builder's child themes. If you're planning on building sites using themes "as-is" for fast site creation, then I'd go with Genesis by StudioPress, ElegantThemes, or Woo Themes. Which of the 3 you choose boils down to preference. I've used themes by all of these theme developers and I'd recommend them to anyone.
