Do you spam on twitter??

It's strange but seem that more and more warriors get suspended accounts on twitter

i followed the link of several reputed members and here is the message i got

"Hold up!

Sorry, the profile you are trying to view has been suspended."

seem like the end of the mass automation tools, or maybe twitter catch on some services that are spammy in their approach

what's your take on twitter warriors?

IMHO i think the issue with accounts like that getting shut down has more to do with the types of messages that get posted. you cant constantly "sell" your followers. you have to engage them ,retweet them, and be part of the community. more often than not when someone constantly posts a sales pitch and nothing else what happens is that they get un-followed and at times reported for spam. i only post a pitch to go to a site with an offer maybe once a month or less. as far as software goes i use tweet deck to manage multiple accounts and i have no issues.

I'm still fairly new on Twitter, but here are my observations. As I understand it, one of the "recommended" strategies is to find a Guru within your niche and follow their followers. Well, I've tried that and almost 100% of the people I end up getting followed by are Internet Marketers and Spammers. I'm pretty sure none of them is going to every buy anything from me so I'm playing whack-a-mole trying to unfollow them. I don't see any point following someone I am competing with. Besides that it fills my Twitter stream with nothing but constant spam.

I now unfollow people on the very first spam message, especially if they are in my same niche. The result so far is that I now have a good (albeit small so far) community of real human followers whom I can engage interact with. Many of them seem to really trust me and have shown real interest in the products I promote. They don't see me as a spammer, but a friend who once in a while has links to share. Some of them actually ask for the links.

I haven't built up enough of a following to see actual sales yet, but I can sense that they are coming. Something tells me this is the way to deal with Twitter, not constantly spam it with unsolicited sales pitches.

I'll have to revisit twitter to see if the big hitters who were auto tweeting me are still there. I joined a couple of months ago just to see what the big deal was. Of course I automatically followed all my email contact list. I was surprised to see 10 to 20 tweets a day from some very respected marketers, sometimes in a row. No judgement from me here, just surprise.

I recently asked a long time warrior here about this because one of his accounts followed me. However, because we "knew" each other, it looked suspicious the way it happened because of (what I could only describe as) a group follow of several hundred other IMers, all within a few hours.

I contacted him about it because the entire process looked automated, and he said it was one of his accounts that he doesn't really use, but would not come right out and tell me it was an automated process or service doing it for him.

So I had a look at a lot of those accounts, and MANY of them were warriors here and other notable marketers that I had heard of before. They virtually ALL had a very poor quality score for Twitter IMO, such as

      > a low ratio of tweets to follow activity
      > a low quality of tweets (ie clickbank)
      > a complete lack of conversations on Twitter (automated account)
      > a slightly higher amount of following to followers (automated)

In the end, I was more or less convinced this was nothing more than SPAM, and I followed NONE of them back. This was proven to be correct because within 48 hours and a very short time frame of a few hours, they ALL unfollowed me.

This partly resulted in a post I made recently where I just decided it didn't matter how many IMers like this followed me on Twitter because they are entirely useless in that regard:

      http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post2057656

So no, I do not SPAM Twitter, but MANY IMers do, although I am not sure they realize it or not due to automation tools.

I was also very surprised when I started following a big (but still very young) guru who claimed to have all the social networking answers and started to get 20 tweets a day promoting stuff, sometimes even up to 30 and like previous said as many as 6 - 8 in a row. Nowadays when someone tweets more than 5 promo's in a row I unfollow them!

Many times I retweet or send someone a DM but don't event get a reply, but I've made good friends and contacts through twitter and use it responsibly!

  • Spamming on Twitter has nothing to do with the fact that you are a warrior or an IMer. All it means is you have violated the Twitter's terms of service and rules as described in Twitter / Twitter Terms of Service and Twitter Support : The Twitter Rules.

Most tools (especially download software that don't provide you with updates over time with the constantly changing terms laid out by Twitter) that blindly follow people for you without proper controls and strict adherence to these rules result in suspended accounts. So, whether you use automation or not, just make sure to constantly check and respect Twitter's terms.

i use twitter mostly for personal reasons now. but i do however use it as part of my big 3 method to get a page indexed quickly. digg and stumbled upon being the other two.
as far as spamming with tweets i guess i tend to look at it the way non IM people do... if all i see is a sales pitch then i unfollow. twitter spam is not an effective means to drive sales and twitter is wise to most of the tricks and scripts people are using.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[2091358].message }}
  • Ok. I think before you can answer that question, you will need to know what constitutes spam on Twitter and Twitter has provided that information very clearly in its terms page.

My personal answer to the OP is 'No'.

I don't spam twitter or anything for that matter.
the general rule.. if you use twitterfeed or post an RSS feed with your account, you're spamming Twitter.
If you engage with your followers, then you're using Twitter correctly.

I provide content to my 50,000+ Twitter followers, occasionally I will slip in a landing page, maybe 1 out of 10 tweets. I do have 5 other accounts with about 10K on each one, mostly send people to my Blogs and Videos. Even programmed in some @ replies and several of my Tweets don't include a link. Twitter is HUGE if you know how to use it properly......

If you do the spam right you can get away with it.

For example give them valuable spam.

By this I mean when they want the best hosting send them to your recommendation.

Then automate the whole process and ensure you're tweeting to the people who actually want what you've got.

      Prime example:

A guy did this - to me - for a service he was offering and he got business from me. I didn't take it as spam because he knew what I wanted via the keywords I used in my tweet.

I will tell you one thing. I am not into spamming, but twitter is a traffic machine that can't be ignored. I guess it would be inevitable that they would crack down.

They work really well with non-IM niches, too.

This is what I'm about to answer too. I'm using my software to autoreply on people who are in need of something. I'm offering them something they really need so I don't consider it as spamming because I'm still filling a need.

Spamming twitter is never a good idea - they have a very strict policy on suspension for over based marketers and spammers now. From the mild research I've done it seems that Twitter is deleting individuals they few that do not have around 20-30 quality posts for each clickbank advertisements that they do.

Bearing this in mind it is important to try and build a follow of niche oriented users, focus on providing them information about the niche - good valid stuff; and then every so often insert a sale - you will make ten fold more this way!

    Cheers,
    Bruce

I share interesting stories. Sometimes these stories involve my own sites. The sites have opt-in form for those who prefer to know more. I wouldn't call a friend and scream an ad at him. Social media to me is more like a phone call rather than a letter. In that sense, I have no problem asking my friends for help.

Here's my score wiseleo | Twitter Grader - last year I was up to 99.93% I think so it dropped a bit.

When I tweet actively, I can post 1000+ tweets a week full of information. Right now, I am too busy developing a product. When I post a self-promo link, I usually RT one of my secondary accounts dedicated to that site.

Many of your target niches have a weekly hashtag chat (journchat, sbbuzz, and so on). For example, I am a Formula 1 fan, so I tweet a lot in #f1 as I watch the race. There are other topic-specific chats. If you can contribute to them with information rather than promos, these people will follow you voluntarily.

There is also something new just getting started that's very viral. That would be Mrtweet's interest-based networks. It's sort of like LinkedIn groups + FB Fan pages on top of Twitter. I am scared thinking what will happen when someone starts a group on weight loss there... LMAO

My experience on Twitter makes me think that the whole of Twitter is composed of just 2 things.

        1. Kids who have nothing better to do.
        2. IM Marketers who just auto-spam it.

Seriously, I find there is very little of real value in Twitter.

There is another reason that some of those warriors accounts might have been suspended - probably not very many but this happened to my account which I have had since 2007 just after Twitter first started getting popular.

This happened a few months ago now, I started getting DMs from people following me who knew me and thought that the DMs they were suddenly getting from me did not fit what they knew about me and thank god they did tell me (thanks to Bev Clement who let me know) and it turns out that somehow my account got hacked and a ton of DMs went out on a daily basis with all kinds of spam links. I might not have known if Bev and others had not queried it immediately with me. Twitter suspended my account because of this.

I got in touch with them as soon as people started telling me and they checked into my account (most likely past history, etc) and they fixed it for me and then all I had to do was change my username and password.

So not saying that is the reason for all the suspensions but some it might have been, espcially those people who don't check their accounts regularly would have been blissfully unaware that their accounts were hacked and that Twitter had suspended them. I heard at the time that hundreds of accounts were hacked in this way.

I use my account to keep in touch with friends, my clients, a few people from WF, to tweet my own offline clients interesting offers and to keep up to date with things going on with Brian Gardner and his crew (Studio Press) and iThemes. Oh and people like Matt Cutts cos I need to know some of the things he tweets about on behalf of my clients.

            Cheers

Yeah. I wouldn't get too excited about that.

Twitter Grader has nothing to with quality scores anymore really, because any IMer can collect 1,000s of followers (usually other IMers!) with software, talk about the weather and copy famous quotes all day long, and then get a perfect 100 on Twitter Grader.

Most IMers with a huge following right now are all full of BOTS or other IMers pushing clickbank products. I ignore/dump Tweeps like that.

what's your take on twitter warriors?
    Things I've noticed...
People who post tweets that are designed to promote affiliate links, ebooks or make money online programs, MLM, et al have lots of followers who want that information. Some even post dozens of messages every hour. I used to know of a marketer for GDI who had over 27000 followers. He posted constantly with only posts wanting to recruit people.
Some people who promote products also post famous quotes - 5 or more quotes for every promotional tweet. That's all they post. Quotes and aff. links.
I also know that if you p*ss someone off at yahoo answers and you just started a new blog (listed in your bio) that promotes your twitter account you could get suspended - at YA and Twitter. That's from personal experience!

it's funny how some come here to keep selling the twitter magic pill,

i myself tried these automated twitter software, and just consider have lost around 300 bucks in these software, as they usually stop to work real fast and the results never match the hype

back to positive talk, not everybody spam on twitter and being a warrior does not mean you are spamming all the social network(as some mention above)

i just wanted to have the views of warriors from the mouth of the horses

if you use twitter like any other community platform, you can build relationship with people.

for me Facebook and twitter were just big time eater, and it's important to manage yourself, especially when you have a full time job like me

One thing most twits dont realize is that all the links are nofollow, so google ignores them. The same thing is true for most web 2.0 sites - all nofollow. So the only real benefit is to get human clicks. Waste of time in my opinion. Why tweet when you can get link juice elsewhere?
