Any thoughts on or experience with Socrates WordPress theme?

Hi All,

I just got an e-mail from someone recommending the Socrates WP theme. Apparently, the biggest selling point is it's flexibility and ability to customize.

Anyone have any experience with or thoughts on this theme?

I currently have someone designing a couple of WP sites for me. She does good work, but it's taking far too long, in my opinion. (It's been over a month.)

Design is NOT my forte and I've learned the value of outsourcing what I'm not good at. So I've outsourced it. But since it's taking so long and I can't start even getting JV partners (much less customers) until the site is up, I feel like I'm being held hostage by my designer. NOT a good feeling!

So maybe I need to buy a good theme and just learn to work with it. Flexibility and customization are important to me though. I DON'T want my sites looking like a lot of the WP sites out there with stock header graphics. (Most are very cheesy.)

Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,
Michelle

How about changing your designer then if you prefer to outsource (perhaps after this last one is finished) - not suggesting you use us as there are plenty of great WP designer members of the WF for you to look at but our typical turnaround for a WP site is 1 week but it can be as little as 1 to 2 days depending on the requirements.

Perhaps your designer just has too many jobs?

Not seen the Socrates WP theme yet so can't comment there, sorry.

    Cheers

I have not used the Socrates Theme myself but it looks interesting, i have used thesis which is great but requires some understanding of CSS and HTML to customize it.
Headway theme is what i am using now it is super easy, basically drag and drop and you can customize just about any part of your blog.
It is a bit more expensive than Socrates but well worth it for you to check it out.

I purchased the Socrates Wordpress theme two nights ago. I was so impressed with it I wrote about my experience with it on my blog at Socrates Wordpress Theme Review. Here it is in a nut shell. Compared to other themes that have tried to do the same this one is far superior. I found a few minor bugs and inconveniences such as incompatibility with some of the plugins I use and the navigation system is a little different. I'm still experimenting with it.

I emailed them about my problems so will see how responsive they are. But overall I plan on changing out 80% of my affiliate sites because it was so easy to work with.and is very easy to monetize. Plus with all of the header graphics I'll easily pay for the theme with the money I save from having graphic designers do my headers.

    Hope this answers your questions.

The type of theme you use depends on the type of site you are building.
A month to design your theme is too long in my opinion
Depending on the style I do them in a couple days to one week.
You may want to find a different designer.

Depending on the function of the site, themes like the Socrates theme maybe too "heavy".
I just saw the theme for the first time today and I liked what I saw but I have no experience with the functionality or ease of use.
For an out of the box flexible style theme I personally like the flexibility theme and its sister the flexsqueeze templates - just google them to find them.

I've had several clients use those but once again it all depends on the function of the site.

    Hope that helps

I personally LOVE the Socrates theme. I have bought other "flexible" themes, and they are always pretty confusing to figure out the customization of it. Socrates is very, very easy.

My advice is to avoid flexible themes where possible and just outsource theme tweaks if you can't do them yourself. However if you can't do either then I would say slightly different and advise that you look for another theme but if you really really want the flexible them then get it. But it won't do you any good in the long term.

an option to take would be 'headway theme'
its a great theme, that doesn't require any coding knowledge to make it pretty unique...

    Otherwise, dump you designer..
he/she clearly does not value your business.
I work with a great programmer and get my designs to her and she codes them for me within a couple of days..
hit me up if you're stuck...

I have been experimenting with wordpress theme for some time now. Mostly because I need a theme that is easy to use, flexible and can be installed/used on multiple blogs without sacrificing the unique character of each blog. When I discovered Socrates theme it was everyting I needed... and then some. I would even go so far as to say that it is currently the best wordpress theme available.

Let me just give you some examples. It is everything wordpress usually gives you PLUS it is SEO optimized, Clickbank integrated and then there is the header cretaor! And the header creator alone is worth. Within a few clicks you create a unique header for your site - including graphic, title and subtitle. And then you can change the size and colour of the text with the click of a button to create thousands of unique designs.

And that is just to wet your appetite. Once you see it all you will know why I say that it is a no brainer. this is the best wordpress theme. And it will only get better as time goes on.

If you need more detail, pop over to my website (bestwordpresstheme.net) to get more details.

PS: Of course their will be a learner curve to master the theme. And their might be some glitches for now. Once you have mastered it, you will be able to create as many blog websites as you like... very fast and with the click of a few buttons.

Just an update from my review at Socrates Wordpress Theme Review. I wanted to post my update here first before adding it to my blog. After installing the Socrates WP theme on multiple sites I noticed what I thought were minor bugs. But after talking to Dan at Socrates he informed me that the navigation and the Google analytics issues were not bugs but actually designed to make your life easier when setting up the blog for the first time. Now that I got my head around it my next blog took about 12 min to setup and I already had two sales from affiliate products within 48 hours. That was pretty cool!

Hi. I am new to this forum, and new to using WP. I have never created a web page yet, but I've done a lot of research, and I think I want to purchase Socretes and get started. I don't know any HTML code or any other code. I'm not a techie. Do you think I am going to be able to create my site myself? My site is primarily going to be videos on our web page. Do you think Socretes will be able to handle a video showcase, and do you think I'll be able to do it myself? As I say, I'm not a techie, but I am willing to learn.

        Lissa,

We have many customers who are creating video blogs with Socrates. If you want to embed YouTube videos it's as easy as grabbing embed code from YouTube and placing it in your wordpress post html.

If you are using your own video you can use a plugin such as Wordtube.

To be honest, almost any theme can be used as video blog. Wordpress core functionality is all you need.

DogScout, we haven't had a single complaint about our new activation code system.

You signup for a 30 day trial, we give you an activation code which is entered in your WP Dashboard and Socrates is fully functional.

If you upgrade via the dashboard, our server knows it and your license never expires. Works like a charm. And we are hard coding the Clickbank affiliate to trial members in our DB.

1000's of users and your "pass" comment is the first negative comment I've seen..

Sorry, I was wondering why it took so long for the 4 sites I looked at to load. How often does the theme need to verify the license? Every time it loads?
I am just not a DMR fan. (Why I don't use PS past version 7 or PSP past version 9) Adobe reader seems to be a necessary evil, but speed with that is not mission critical, though the pervasiveness still bugs me.

All the sites I looked at also looked pretty much the same... header, silver bar, etc. Personal opinion, feel free to ignore me, most do.

        Lisa,
I have used Socrates on multiple sites. There is a small learning curve but for the most part it is a really nice platform. If you are looking at monetizing your site I believe it is one of the best if not the best. Granted I haven't tested every system out there. There support staff has been great too. If you need help with anything I can give you some shortcuts and decrease that learning curve. Just contact me and I'll be happy to help you no strings attached.

          Dogscout,

There is no load time issue. The DRM does not check our DB on public page loads, only on dashboard loads. There is no impact to your visitors.

Slow loading installs are usually a result of excessive plugins and calls to outside js and image files. And of course slow hosts..

I bought Socrates on top of Auto Content Cash, combined with WP Sales Automator. I wish for app that has all three functions. Your site looks great. Combo ACC/ Socrates.
