I finally took the plunge and "down"graded from Vista to XP. All I can say is I wish I'd done it a lot sooner instead of wasting a year trying to "adjust" to a crap operating system! For those of you who actually like Vista (and I presume you have at least 3 gigs of RAM) I should explain that my system had slowed to a crawl despite repeated system restores, recoveries and installation of SP1.

Not only that but it had developed at least a half dozen serious bugs and wouldn't run several of my favorite programs correctly.

Anyway, back to the story: The downgrade was not nearly as difficult as they make it sound, although the difficulty level may depend on your machine specifics. Just make sure you get copies of your drivers (the XP versions!). In my case, Packard Bell had them all for download on their support page.

Another thing I recommend is to forget about "slipstreaming" drivers or service packs using nLite as recommended by a lot of sites. It just complicates things and it can destroy your product key. Imagine going through all that work and then having your product key rejected!

You can install drivers and service packs once you have XP up and running.

So here's a quick rundown:

1. Download XP drivers for your machine and make copies on CD or other storage device.
2. Do a full format using the free utility from dban.org
3. Install XP
4. Install drivers and service pack.
5. If you've got an older copy of XP with IE6 upgrade to IE7 and/or Firefox. The newer browsers offer far superior display quality and features.

That's it. Even if you've got 20 gigs of RAM running Vista just imagine what it will do with XP!

      David,

I'm sure you probably aren't seeing a series of really great 'Mac' ads over there. However there's a really great Mac ad running right now here in the states. A gentleman (PC) is sitting at a table 'budgeting' his money. On one end of the table is a huge pile of cash for advertising Vista. On the other end, is just a few bundles of cash for fixing Vista bugs. Another guy (Mac) walks up and asks PC, "That's not a lot of cash for fixing all of the Vista bugs is it? Are you sure its enough to do the job?" Whereupon PC ponders, then responds, "You're right. I should just move it all over to advertising." as he sweeps everything to the big pile.

Vista is better than XP in SO many ways...better security, better UI, better functionality, better integration, better support, better API's...

But I applaud your instructions. Very clear. And super useful for those who are unwilling to take the plunge yet.

This is an interesting thread. David I have Vista and have gotten used to it but there is so much I cannot do regarding my programs and old files, etc.

I looked at XP conversion but for some reason was turned off. My computer is a Dell and they only supply Vista.

But thanks for the information and the clarity of it.I have to agree with Steven about the security. I don't even run a virus scan program now as it took up too much memory. So far no complaints but also use Firefox which is likewise good for security.

Actually, Dell is one of the few PC makers that still offers XP, as a quick check of their website will confirm.

Whoo Oh not yet another Mac Vs PC?!

STOP I will have none of it. Cease and desist. or I'm callin' Shaft, John Shaft(Not Shatner)

Pretty(not Patrick) Please with a cherry on top.
FYI (Very High % of "Professional Photographers are on Mac not PC)

The new Mac commercial is just plain dumb with the PC guy holding a big red button. When ever the Mac guy tries to say the "V" word Mr PC presses the buzzer to drown him out. "We are back to calling our OS Windows"
    EEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHH
I think the SNL staff write those commercials.
That show is unfunny as are the commercials for WynnDoze with Gates and Seinfeld.
Ah, the wonders of institutional advertising.

I got my first Vista machine from Dell. It was the worst 4k investment I made. Overall, I'll give Vista a 6 out of 10. XP was more an 8 out of 10. Each has it's plus and minus point.

I think the next computer I buy will be from Apple.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of problems are people having with Vista?

For lesser powered machines, you can simply run the performance tester, and it'll stop using all the pretty stuff in Vista that takes up extra memory.

I was originally running Vista on 2 GB ram, but recently upgrade to 4 GB (for games...Vista was running fine on 2 GB).

One of the most important things, when running Vista make sure you've updated all of your hardware drivers to the latest ones.

I've noticed some badly programmed games are a little less stable on Vista than XP, but with the game developers releasing patches, theres nothing I can't play or use on my system.

I may be a minority, but I do love my Vista

    cheers

This computer cam with vista installed, I like it better tha xp. But then I'm that odd one that preferred win98. The first computer I ever used had xp back in 2000. (Yea, I was late to the puter thing) That was my ex wifes, when we split I got a second hand with 98, loved it. Then sadly they finally stopped support for 98 and I dug into my bulletproof, triple combination locked wallet and bought a new Gateway. I found vista to be a lot better than the reports I'd heard. That being said, this computer is also dual-core with two gigs of ram, so it was built to take vista. I'd still rather have 98 though if they'd update the video and sound stuff with it.

      Hi Sam:
I want to uninstall Vista on my new laptop, and install XP. I still have the disks that came with my desktop, I just don't know what to delete, and what to leave alone. I don't want to ruin my laptop before I even get to use it.

Can you give me a simple rundown? I sure would appreciate any help.

So far I've really had no problems, but I'm not a gamer. Well I am, but I play my games on the tv with ps2. But like I said, my computer was built with vista in mind. And all but a couple of older programs run fine with it. I found a article at c-net that showed you how to get most older programs to run on it.

      Sam,

Is the Performance Tester something that is already on the computer or do we have to download it?

I am running Vista x64 on 4Gb Ram and it runs well... but I would like to see what it is like w/o the junk I don't need.

      Thanks man

I also would like to know what this performance tester is as I know nothing about it and my computer locks up frequently due to memory shortage. I was convinced by the geek that helped me put this computer together that I didn't need more memory when I bought it. I don't have the money to buy more memory or even the knowledge to install it even if I did. I hate this damn computer, but obviously can't do without it.

    Hi Dixie,

I'd love to help, but I've never downgraded Vista, so I'd only be guessing!

DavidO seems to have listed the steps well.

Unless you really know what you're doing, or really have a huge reason why Vista won't work for you, I'd stick with Vista.

CD's for your desktop may not work for your laptop, as laptops use different hardware, and you may need hardware specific drivers that don't come on standard Windows CDs.

    Personally, I like Vista

It's all built in to Vista.

Go to your Start Menu, then in the Search box, type:

    performance tools

    ...and press enter.

This will load it up, and there should be a link to do a performance scan.

I think it only goes up to 5.9 max.

In the left hand menu there are options to adjust the visual effects, etc., manually.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Tim,

How many memory do you have?

It may be worth checking to see what is running in the background on your computer.

If a tonne of stuff gets loaded at startup, this is the most common reason for memory shortage and a badly performing computer.

It'll also be a good idea to run a full virus and spyware sweep to make sure theres nothing dodgy in the background using all your resources up.

But the performance scan should adjust your "special effects" to what best suits your system's setup.

Memory is pretty cheap these days - it might be worth saving up for an extra gig if it's going to increase your productivity.

I know nothing annoys me more when I'm working than a slow or badly performing computer.

    cheers

I have had Vista from the very beginning and after Microsoft updated the driver support, I have had no problems. Its more reliable and stable than XP. I guess this comes down to software problems and computer maintenance in general. I have 2Gb ram, Quad processor and it runs smoothly and without any problems.
