AWeber/Offline Consulting Advice Needed

Hi,

I have a question about how to properly structure a service I want to add to my offline consulting business. I'd like to be able to offer to setup a customer email capture form and newsletter for local businesses and would use AWeber to implement it. I'm contemplating offering the form setup on their site as a free service.

So, my question has to do with how to properly arrange this. The AWeber support told me "it is against our terms for a customer to use his account to manage lists for clients. This is so that, in the event of a conflict over list ownership, we aren't in the position of having to be in the middle of the conflict. Your clients must have their own accounts." AWeber's 30-day trial is no longer free and requires billing info to setup.

How can I arrange this and how are other offline consultants workng this out with their clients?

By the time I set up a mailing list for a client, we have a pretty good relationship.

I sit down with them and step them through signing up for an Aweber account (through my affiliate link). I explain that this way they "own" the list which is an asset for their business.

I just set up the client's aweber account with the client's billing info. I usually end up being the only one that ever touches it.

I appreciate the feedback. So, it sounds like I won't be able to offer this email list capture setup as a free service at least through Aweber.

Use Mail Chimp if you want free -but why on earth would you want free anyway? Free doesn't usually equal high perceived value.

  They pay me for the aweber account that I setup for them. I show them how to use it, etc but they have their own account.

Well, for one - Aweber is known among IM guys here but
among regular folks it's not:

ConstantContact is far more well-known due to heavy advertising
on mainstream sites and in print media. Icontact is another
one people have heard of and Vertical Response too.

Why are these little-used among us IM people? I dunno, but
chances are these brand names will be more recognized than
Aweber among your prospects.

Technically you could use your existing Aweber account to manager the customer's list, but SHOULD things go sour it's gonna be a mess.

I think that is why the support person stated that Aweber does not want you managing the lists "belonging" to other people so that THEY don't have to be called upon to get involved in the matter.

Just easier to start up their own separate account. Plus if anything ever happened to you, they'd be stranded without access to their list! (unless you let all your clients access your account...which is its own recipe for disaster)

Plus, do you really want clients who are so in need of a cut-rate
price they won't spring for $20-30 a month for an email system?

  If you feel like you need a freebie in order to entice offline clients, you really need to work on your positioning.

  FYI. I had a phone conversation with AWeber customer support yesterday. They explained that I can setup and accumulate a client's email list under my account. At any point, once the client wants to get the lists and control transferred to them, its a simple process of exporting and transferring the email lists and message sets to their new account.
  
  I think I've been convinced of the disadvantages of giving this or any service away even as a promotional tool.
