Domain forwarding/redirect question

again newbie here with nuts and bolts question.

If you do a forward or redirect on a link, does that mean you have to actually get paid hosting, i.e. sign up for 6 months or a year or hosting or is there some way to do it without that?

It seems to me the domain you buy gets "parked" on a server with some default page. But to do that do you have to buy the hosting?

thanks,

Will

If you buy a domain through GoDaddy, you can do a redirect right from their domain manager.

If you get a hosting account at hostgator, you can host unlimited domains for 9.99/month, no commitment.

Most registrars allow you to do a redirect on your domain for free. The process to set it up is different but quite similar with each registrar. There is always a section on the registrar admin panel that allows you to specify either a mask or forward url for that domain. Parked domains are usually just the default setting when you register a domain.

Just about every registrar has URL forwarding. Not every registrar has it for free, but most do. However, the URL forwarding offered isn't necessarily 301 forwarding. I myself use Fabulous.com primarily for my domain registrations and their redirection is 302, which is supposed to be only for temporary redirections. I do know that GoDaddy gives option of forwarding type, including 301 which is what you want.

If your registrar doesn't offer it, I'd suggest checking Dreamhost.com regularly for one of their good annual deals. Periodically they'll give a year of hosting and domain for under $10, and it's pretty easy to set up domains/301 forwarding in there. There may be some free DNS services around that have free 301 forwarding too but I've never had to use those so I wouldn't know what they are.
