Default Alexa traffic rank - what does it really mean?

If there's a website with an Alexa traffic rank of 80,000 then what does that translate to in terms of daily visitors? I've never understood Alexa, so it's about time I found out!

Alexa is relatively meaningless because it only measures people who have the
tool bar installed.

However, when one of my sites was ranked around 75,000, I was making
200 sales a month during that time and getting about 10,000 visitors a
month.

Hopefully, this will give you some idea of what to expect.

Alexa gives you those stats based on the users who have the alexa tool installed on their browser, anything under 100,000 is good but do understand that millions of folks including myself don't have the alexa tool bar installed on my system, alexa can mean something but it doesn't mean everything.

Thanks, that's great. 10k visitors, per month huh Steve? Now I know what I am dealing with with this potential JV.

I guess the formula is roughly something like this:

Alexa Rank = x / 8 = monthly traffic.

Now for some fresh air.

[edit]

That can't be right actually...as the rank number goes DOWN closer to zero, as you get more traffic. I wish I did maths at school, lol.

I was getting 200 uniques per day (so around 6000 visitors a month) and got a 60,000 alexa rank. It said I got higher than Shoemoney's blog for that particular day, which is impossible since his site gets like 10,000 unqiues per day (300,000 visitors per month). So it means nothing. Agree. The only thing I can think of is to charge a higher advertising price for your blog.

I have never found Alexa to be even close to the actual traffic to a site. Like stated above, if the visitors don't install the toolbar then it means nothing.

Alexa is good if you want to see the variations in time, or if you want to compare yourself to competitors.

My apologies to you Alexa. I was referring to your namesake, the site.

You are FAR from meaningless.

I've got sites that rank in the 1,000,000+ spot on Alexa, but rank on the first page of Google! And, ya don't have to install the Google tool bar either.

I recommend the SearchStatus Firefox extension. Alexa rank is not so accurate, but it gives you a good indicator about how much traffic a site get.

Without the Alexa rank you are blind. Example: you want to buy a product from a website. This website has Alexa rank 12.000. So you know that it is a very old site, it is trusted, so the product must be good.

But if the seller website has Alexa rank 25.000.000, then you must be careful, because this means that this site is brand new or only a few people visit it daily.

So install SearchStatus and don't be blind.

I have two sites, each sites get 200 unique visitors per day. The first one has Alexa rank 123.000, the second has Alexa rank 1.600.000. So it isn't always accurate...

I think that Alexa is mostly good for comparing your own progress, as some niches will obviously have a higher percentage of visitors than others with the Alexa toolbar installed.

For instance, one of my sites got 20,000 unique visitors in September but carried an Alexa rank of just under 400k for most of the month.

Yes, it's relative, and mostly meaningless but one more measuring stick helps for motivation if nothing else.

As always, just MHO...

Very little, as is obvious from the majority of the posts.

"The product must be good"? Well I'd like to see a statement like that in writing - heck sorry it is in writing

I would say that a site with an Alexa rank under 50k would be one that I would lend a certain amount of credence to, but not necessarily see it a s a guarantee of all that was stated or offered.

Not many people know this, but actually a couple of months ago,

Alexa began receiving data from all the major traffic reporting sites in addition to their own in order to provide a more accurate rating.

So it's not just alexa toolbar downloaders that are measured anymore.

Hope this helps.
