A place to sell your domains?

I saw a post a while back that asked whether or not there was a place that he could unload his old or unused domains and get cash back. I dont remember who it was that asked or what the responses were but I am also interested in this topic.

For example, lets say that you bought a domain name for a new project. You gave it your all but it was just not a good idea. You are now stuck with the domain and you have a few options. Try and sell it someone else who is interested in the idea. Keep it and let it sit there. Or let it expire and lose 100% of your investment.

My question is..is there a place that you can sell back that domain name and receive a fraction of the original cost of the domain?

If this place does exist:

Can someone give me the link? How does it work? How is it set up?

If this place doesn't exist:

Why not? what is wrong with the idea? is the market too weak for this type of thing?

Basically what I am asking is why have I never heard of anything like this. I am sure it must exist..where can I find it?

Any information would be greatly appreciated

Hmm I looked at sedo and it seems like it is more of an auction style thing. What I am talking about is a place that u can sell the domain to the company and they directly pay u a certain amount. That way you dont have to worry about doing an auction or waiting to find a buy or anything like that. You just simply dump the domain and your done with it.

  • So you want a site that acts like Walmart's customer Service Center? If you buy a domain name and it doesnt work, you can return it for a partial refund?

I have never heard of such a thing. It might exist, but that is just weird.

Hey Charles, I guess that is basically what I am asking about. A place to get rid of your old domains and get a partial refund. That way you don't lose 100% on it once you realize it just isn't a profitable idea

Why go through the trouble for a $7 domain purchase? Are you buying premium domains for your projects?

You can unload them quick over at Digital Point.

It's not something im personally looking for. Its just something im curious about. Like in my mind it seems like if someone created a site that bought those dumped domains rom people. And then resold them at a cheaper price than godaddy or namecheap you could turn a profit and make everyone happy. So I am just wondering why this doesnt exist. I asked a friend about it and he said hes not sure what the market would be like so I am trying to see if that is the reason that it doesnt exist. Is this an idea that just wouldnt take off? Are there not enough people that are interested in just getting rid of their old domains that they don't use but don't want to bother with the hassle of finding a buyer?

For a specific company that buys domains and is happy to buy people's liquidated portfolios etc., there's BuyDomains (their buying form). There's companies/domain investors everywhere that are like that - you're just not aware of them. Hell, we'll soon be putting up a site at WeWantYourDomains.com where people can send their liquidations, but there will be a win-win twist involved.

Anyways, there's also places to sell pretty quick like DigitalPoint and NamePros. Specifically you could look for WTB posts on DigitalPoint or the Names Wanted section of NamePros and you'll commonly see people that are looking for sellers who need to liquidate names and will pay under reg fee for them...usually the true liquidation ones are $1-$2 per name.

Correct. There's no "go to" site that everyone goes to to liquidate domains (though Bido.com when it was running was close since they were really short auctions and domains for the most part went for liquiddation prices). There's also no domain investor/company that I'm aware of that will buy ANY domain (except maybe for a penny apiece ). There are however a lot of domain investors/companies like BuyDomains with areas where people can submit their domains for sale, with many of them specifically saying "If you're in need of money and have domains to liquidate, we'll buy them!" and get domains for pennies on the dollar in some cases.

LOL you're asking the wrong person...I don't actively seek out those sites so I don't really know any offhand besides BuyDomains. Honestly, if I were you I would go through NamePros and DigitalPoint, look for WTB threads inviting people to liquidate their domains and contact those people in addition to contacting BuyDomains. Also, I did mention I'll be opening this kind of site soon (won't necessarily be a liquidation site per se but pretty close), so if you had questions, feel free to PM me.
