I usually create them in the backroom. We have a big table where we can roll the banner material out so it lays flat.

I usually create the design in Illustrator. For cutting the vinyl out, FlexiCut is supposed to be good, but I'm still trying to get it to work right. They recently released new drivers, so I need to give those a try.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I use PayPal. I log into PayPal and click "send money," describe the banner I want in the notes area, and put an artist's name in the recipient field. Then I click "send" and a couple hours later the banner is in my email.

Okay, seriously, I use Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing

For software to use yourself there is a lot of options, use google and you will find many software designed specifically for that purpose.

Paint.net or any other graphic software you can use, though if you are not a designer / artist it can take a lot of time and effort to get something that looks half decent. Also you will probably want to use photos of people and other art in your banner, for that you will have to by a license to use the images at istockphoto.com or various similar sites. Make sure you get the correct license for the art or photo you intend to use or you could get into legal issues with the copyright owner.

If it is a one off thing, for a site or sites such as header banner, layout etc... Look at the WSO section of the forum, there is usually quite a lot of offers and would be cheaper to pay for a WSO than spend days or weeks designing your own graphics especially if you aren't the artist type or never created graphics before.

You might want to try XHeader.
