How beneficial is it that the domain name matches the primary keyword phrase?

Does doing this tip the competition off to your key words?

Does it matter?

Thanks

    Hi.

Having a keyword-rich domain name is an important factor of Search Engine Optimization. Choosing the right domain could boost your search engine rankings.

If you have an opportunity to snatch a keyword-rich domain name, do not hesitate to grab it.

But you have to build backlinks to beat your competitors!

Google over-weights the keywords in domain names, so YES for now it's very beneficial.

PLUS if someone links to you by your web address then it'll have the keywords in the anchor text (another ranking factor).

Your competitors can take a look at what you're optimizing for in your title tags. Does it matter? If they can do it to you then you can do it back - works out kind of even in my book!

Basically backlinks are the most important factor in ranking, there are others as you'll find out.

I'm not having a pop here Brian, it's always good to see articles on SEO...

...the sites directory structure has an arbitrary number in it, the title tags are poorly optimized, it's a page rank one, the full articles are on the home page of the blog (rather then a snippet) which can be seen as duplicate content by google, his site architecture is really poor AND THE GUY'S A PROFESSIONAL SEO!

Bottom line, his post seems like disinformation to me.

I have no doubt that you are correct in everything you just wrote... however, I did a quick Google search for the topic and his was the first result. Honestly, I didn't even read more than the first paragraph where he quoted Cutts.

Trust me on this or don't....

I test the crap out of these kinds of issues, and a 100% match between your domain name and the searcher's search term matters. This is especially true if you target lower competition longtail phrases.

Having your keyword in your domain makes it easier for you to rank your site later on. It helps potential users to decide what your site is about at a glance too.

      Good observation ...
