This Is Why You Should Backup Your Email

Have you ever experienced that sinking feeling?
Well that's what i felt when i logged into my email acc only to discover that all my folders were empty. All my saved mail,my inbox and even the trash folder were empty, zip, zero, nada.

Three years of saved messages gone, totally my fault for not paying attention and always putting it off.
The only glimmer of hope is that customer support told me that i was not the only one today and that they have received allot of complaints.
Hopefully they can sort it out otherwise as the saying goes i'm "up the creek without a paddle"

Do yourself a fave and backup your mail.

I used a long since forgotten email client. They used to have a browser which was bought out by AOL. Twice I lost all of my email. So I changed to Microsoft Outlook. Low and behold my computer crashed when I lost my power and when I rebooted I could not reload my Outlook, I got an error. So I paid Microsoft $49 to fix the problem, but I couldn't retreive the lost email, all I got was the ability to use Outlook again and start from scratch.

No, I didn't have back ups either time. Did I learn my lesson, NO!

Yes, it is absolutely true, I had also faced similar problems and I have to pay a lot for that. I was not aware that my emails will be lost like this and I will have no option for the same. I had lost so many important data also. I also now used to backup my all data on a regular basics.

It is a timely reminder that I should back up my emails. I have to say that my emails could do with a good clean out. It is far easier to delete a file than it is to throw out masses of paper files.

I did lose all my emails when my PC crashed and I had to start anew. I did have a few old backups to rely on. Also recently, I deleted inadvertenly a whole folder with emails on my PC. Fortunately, as I had not deleted the emails off the server hosting the account, when I recreated the folder all 500 emails were downloaded into the folder again.

The morale of the message started in this thread is to make regular backups if your email is important.

Just make sure you back up the right files. Some e-mail programs make the actual e-mail messages hard to find. It wasn't until I needed to veryfy something someone sent me in a e-mail last year that I discovered (to my horror) that I'd been backing up the wrong Thunderbird files for the last couple of years.

Mozy Home is a free program that will protect up to 2Gb.

For less than $60 a YEAR you can take your data offsite (store in another location) and perform restores from your online storage from any computer in any location the internet is live!

Both Mozy and Carbonite can do this for you.

I liked it so much I became an affiliate for Mozy...

Acronis has a competing product, but it had issues the last time I checked it out... may have changed since.

It's nice to backup your data, but HOME offices burn *To The Ground* much more often than real Offices (ones with sprinkler systems - Doh!) do... so getting your data OFFSITE is CRITICAL to your business survival!

Just remember - There are 2 kinds of people in this world:
      Those who backup RELIGIOUSLY...
      and Those Who Soon Will...

I wonder if there is any safe way to backup all the Hotmail and Gmail data too... now that those can't be used in Outlook...
      ...any thoughts on that?

Well i have been assured by AOL that the problem lies with them and that it will be sorted, two days now and no emails restored yet.
      I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    Food for thought.

If you happen to get sued, it is likely that the plaintiff will subpoena your email.

And your lawyer will, of course, have to go through it to see what the opposing legal team will find there.

And for every email you have saved, you get to pay someone by the hour to read it and interpret its impact on the case.

Not telling you what to do... not telling you how to run your business... but seriously. Think about it.

Use IMAP with gmail so you have a local copy and a copy on the server. You'll never run into that problem unless both your computer and gmail crash at the same time.
