SPAM - affiliate links?

Just got a SPAM warning. From what I read I'm unable to put affiliate links directly in the message (what I read was talking about the sig)...

...am I able to put a link to my blog in a message body with information about the product that then has a call to action with an affiliate link in?

Just trying to get some value out of helping people...

I've read that. It's referring to the sig/avatars/blogs...

...assuming this is the same as inline text in the post, I can do it?

I was looking more for a YES/NO, unless there was some material that covered my point specifically.

On most occasions, no. It is seen as self-promotion.

      Thanks for the help Marhelper.

Any admins have a position on this, is it case by case or more rigid rules?

    Definately not.
There is a classified ads section where you can pay to advertise.
    This is the discussion forum.

It's a recommendation. I would have linked to aweber either way...

So effectively I'm being stopped from making free money, I posted 2 links in around 22 posts and they were both relevant to the conversation - they were solutions.

I don't care about internet marketing per se, I care about making money, and when the internet marketing gets in the way of the making money that's when something's gone wrong.

@sbucciarel The model I had in my mind was provide massive amounts of help to people and then put an affiliate link in where I would have linked anyway. That is a form of selling yes, educate people on how to get value out of a product.

What's wrong is your interpretation of the purpose of this forum.

Most contributors are happy to help other members without seeking a direct reward. You seem to want recompense for your tidbits of advice.

That's apart from the obvious fact that an affiliate link to any recommended product or service is bound to compromise the integrity of that advice, especially from someone new to the forum.

Perhaps you should concentrate on building your reputation first, before complaining about not being able to monetize your posts.

You can go make free money elsewhere, this forum is not totally structured that way. (there are still free ways to make money here, but promoting affiliate links is not one of them)

Sorry if we 'got in your way'. We have only been here for 10 years, nothing new.

First note: See the title under Les Gibbon's name? That's not a joke or a vanity comment. This is an area he pays special attention to, and he's the reason affiliate links aren't the problem they've been in the past.

Allen's rules post about sig files is pretty clear. Those rules were created in response to a plague of people who'd come in here and post nonsense and one-liners to get attention for the affiliate links in their sig files. It was always a low-level nuisance, but it got bad when a few programs started teaching people to do that. All of a sudden, whoof!

If you were not apparently using your real name, you'd most likely have been banned for a while for this thread. The thread itself would certainly have been deleted. People with a whole week's seniority should know better than to act as though they're owed something.

As for the rest... You might do well to assume we have some clue. And then to consider what would happen when a ton of people, with varying degrees of brains and experience, started applying the same "model."

Like Greg said, some of us have been here 10 years or more. We've seen plenty of this stuff, and we know how it works in the long run.

Affiliate offers cleverly disguised as massive amounts of help are not permitted. Zero tolerance. I'd suggest you not try spamming the forum with your links or you will be banned. It's that simple.

No affiliate links in posts or in signatures. If you post a link to your blog, the info had better be helpful or you will be flagged for self-promotion. The main discussion board is for discussion. If you want to sell something, there's Classified, WSOs and Warriors for Hire sections where you can pay to do that.

Right, glad we got that sorted out. No aff links.

      Chris,

Now that we have it clear that this isn't an advertising forum, here's the other shoe...

Posts which are really helpful and which directly answer another member's question(s) can include an affiliate link. It must be labelled as an affiliate link, and also include a non-affiliate link to the same product.

Doing this is tricky, though. If a moderator even thinks it's done just for the link, it will likely be deleted, and may result in a temporary ban. This is a judgement call on the part of whatever moderator reads it, which is why it's risky. Do it too often and it will look like you're doing it for the links and not the discussion.

I would have linked the phrase "here's the other shoe" to my Zappos affiliate link.

        Cheers,
        Becky

(For those who're humor-impaired, I was just kidding... willy-nilly aff links get a cocked eyebrow and maybe a ban hammer from the mods.)

That seems like a good idea Paul.
