The .com . net .info debate

Hey I no this has probably been mentioned before but I would really like an answer. I have been searching and found my exact keyphrase for my domain has been taken as a .com and a .net, which would usually be my first choice.

.me .org .mobi .us .biz .info .co.uk .org.uk are all available which one would be your best choice out of the remaining. Can I rank as well without the .com domain or will it take more effort.

Any advise greatly appreciated.

.com's and .net's are easier to put in the top of the SE's. But...

Are the .com and .net taking top ranking right now for your phrase? If not then, you can easily take top spot using other TLD's depending on the other competing sites.

As for the best choice... choose the cheapest.

If you are not relying on type in traffic it should not make much of a difference. If someone types in a domain name the odds are good they will end it with .com.

the .com domain is not even in the top 100 in google and neither is the .net. The only issue I have is which of the domains left is more business like/trustworthy are there any that people don't click on or is it a matter of if it ranks it gets clicks.

As your preferred choices are not available, I would either go for .biz and/or .co.uk, the latter because you reside in the UK, even if your business is global.

.com is the king emperor, but I have used both .biz and .co.uk to good effect.

    Good luck with your choice.

    Regards,
    Jeff.

everything is about content and links, the domain extension some times helps but if your content and back linking are up they will out do the domain name

I'd probably go for .org over .info, but I guess it depends what your site is about.

Well the norm, as far as I see it is for a .com

Every normal person relates anything internet to .com

if you cant get that, then as said above - go with .org for credibility or .info if you are providing info

    for example - dogtraining.info
    or curecancer.org
    (not great examples!)
    but you get the meaning!

what is your product or keyword?

I would stick with dot com and you can get a good ranking easily compared to other extensions. Since dot info is abused by proxies and spammers wouldn't advise it.

Next to com dot net would be a good alternative.

Of course for medical or authority related websites dot org would be the best bet.

Here's my experience based on around 200 domains. The .com's are most easily remembered. They also seem to rank higher on average. My .info's seem to be last. This could be because they are cheap and spammers use tons of them. That is my experience, your mileage may vary.

It's going to depend somewhat on your niche but your best bet would be either a .org or an extended .com. I'd avoid .info since Google has started sandboxing these domains more strictly than other TLDs.

When I say extended .com that means adding a little something to the keywords. For example, if your keyword was green widgets and greenwidgets.com was taken you could go with bestgreenwidgets.com or cheapestgreenwidgets.com. You could even use hyphenated names like green-widgets.com.

Also, with some good SEO (aka link building) you can rank even without the keyword in the URL, especially for long tail terms or against competitors who're not SEO savvy.
