How important is it to know HTML and CSS and other associated languages?

Is there an advantage to knowing those compared to using a wysiwyg editor?

Do most people in internet marketing learn these markup languages and use them rather than a wysiwyg editor?

Obviously, I'm just a newbie trying to see what most people do.

Thanks for your input.

As a newbie a WYSIWYG editor is your best choice and I know that back when I was first learning it was a lifesaver. I still would not consider myself a pro, but as time went on it actually helped me to basically teach myself html/css. I wouldn't say it is a complete requirement to have to learn html/css, but it is a wise business decision when you are starting out to get you through at least the minor changes without having to hire a programmer to get you through.

There is always an advantage to knowing codes and languages......but, if you don't know that end of the IM spectrum and don't have a tech partner, the wysiwyg editor can make the difference between having something online and looking for a way to get it online.

While my partners can do awesome things beyond what I can do with a wysiwyg editor, if I had to get something out right away and couldn't depend on someone else's expertise, I could still do so.

Knowing some code can help but as far as building webpages, I don't know of any web designers or graphics designers that don't use Dreamweaver or what most folks would call a wysiwyg editor. It's handy to know what the code behind the page means and does when things get buggered up but I don't know of too many people who write straight up html code. I am a bit of a hack though and people cringe at my html code but...whatever. It looks purdy to me!

I spent some time as a pro web developer. If I started again, I'd learn HTML (buy a simple book, do it in a day)...

...and learn the basics of CSS, like how to set backgroud-color, color of the fonts, borders etc. Outsource the rest (unless you don't have the money to currently leverage).
