Considering writing niche e-book

Hi guys,

I have an ebook idea I am considering and am wondering if I should go forward with it. It is a How to Start a _________ Business or How to Make Money _____________ type book. It's pretty niche and has nothing to do with IM. I'd say if you went to Barnes & Noble you might find a book on the topic, but it's not a given.

The target market would mostly be people looking to make side incomes such as stay at home moms, but it's do-able as a full time business too.

The book will all be based on my personal experiences and I feel like I have a lot of value to offer in the book. It is not bull**** hype at all.

With that being said, I don't want to write something that isn't going to make me some good money.

I guess I am wondering how to evaluate the profit potential of my e-book?

Thanks!

You will have greater profits with a multi media course such as:
    audio, video, transcripts, workbook...etc

I would test the waters with Ebay first, then depending on the conversions and the market demographics, I would then begin to scout for affiliates and JV's

That is a great idea! Would you also include a book?

Yes, but not a full 100 page book, but rather something
like a "quick start" guide with resources and things to that nature.

Your profit will be related to your marketing rather than your product, so if you're already able to effectively market other peoples products - then you're probably good to go. If you haven't already learned to successfully sell other peoples stuff then you'll probably struggle with your own product.

Having a product is irrelevant if you can't access the target market to sell it effectively.

Agreed, that is great way to put to someone with minimal
      marketing efforts.

I mostly agree with you Andy, but have a question...You don't think the niche matters? I just watched a video that told me that in a nut shell there are three BIG niches that make most of the money. It made sense, but not sure if it is correct info. Wouldn't the IM niche possibly have more money in it because of the sheer amount of people looking to make money online than say dogs or something else? Not sure.

I just want to follow up on Andy's comment.

The first thing is to determine if there is a market for your book. If there is, the second thing is to find a way to put your message before that market. And finally, you MUST have a sales page that converts. If you're page won't convert--nothing else matters.

Notice in the above paragraph that all 3 of the things I mentioned should ideally be done before you actually write your book. I don't mean that people should try selling junk ebooks out there, but the simple fact of the matter is--just as Andy said--your profits are more related to your marketing skills than the quality of your book.

There are tons and tons of great books out there that just don't sell. Why? Because the writers didn't do their homework before they wrote their books. Also, they didn't have the marketing skills required to drive the sales of their book.

      My quote for the day:
"Making money online is 99% research and marketing."

If you leave these things out and just start writing your book--I'm 99% sure you won't make any money.

If you do your research and plan your marketing, writing your book becomes just a formality. Really! Writing is essentially a process of filling in the blanks. What are the blanks? They are the things prospective buyers in your niche have indicated they want.

The guys who make it to the top of the Clickbank charts selling IM related products are by no means the best product developers in the world! Sure, there are some great products there, but there is also a lot of junk. What they are good at is research and marketing.

Again, look at Andy's comment above...

Having a product is irrelevant if you can't access the target market to sell it effectively.

That advice is as good as you will get on this forum! --Mike

You need to define your USP. How is your book different from every other how to make money book? Why should a prospect buy your book instead of somebody else's? Your marketing will hinge on that.
