I need to break-down and get a graphics program to do some basic work with some WordPress Headers. I don't have any experience with Photoshop so there wouldn't be any relearning to do with either choice. My questions are:

1) Which is easier to learn and/or has more tutorials available?
2) If I decide to eventually learn more about graphics, which would be best for long term?

And yes, I know there are several good products out there to purchase, but I'm not looking to "buy" anything till I get to know more about what the programs will do and what I need.

Thanks,
Steve

If I remember correctly gimp shop is just gimp made to look more like photoshop. I've used both and still use gimp on occasion.
Try doing a G search for both gimp and gimp shop tutorials and see which one you think you would be most comfortable learning.
The nice thing about them is if you don't like the feel of one you can always try the other.

Go for gimp the new version 2.6 is awesome...but remember all graphics software has a learning curve.

Here is a link to a gimp help resource book

A quick Google of gimp will bring up loads of other great resources to aid you.

I found Gimp cumbersome... Needed something simple. After some research I found a product called PaintDotNet. Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing The basic program is great and the user base is very active. There are an awful lot of really useful plugins available through the forum.

Give it a shot.... You'll like it!

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I'll get up to speed with Gimp, especially since Geoff seems to know his way around with it.

Chris, Paint.Net was just what I needed for the short term! Worked great for what I needed.

    Thanks again,
    Steve

I use Gimp basically because it's got a very strong community, and there's always plenty of tutorials to be found. If you're planning on going down the design root seriously though, it may be a better decision to try GimpShop? It's basically layed out in a similar way to Photoshop - For ease of use between the two. So in the future if you think you might migrate to photoshop, It may be easier if you start with GimpShop. Just my two cents though - Gimp is awesome no matter what version you use!
