Does anyone know of any home study elocution courses? I am doing a lot of voiceover screen captures and I want to reduce costs by doing voiceovers myself, but when I do they do not sounds nearly as professional as when I get a voiceover artist in. I am looking for something that will help me develop a good tone and reduce my accent.

Have you looked at Toast Masters International? They focus on public speaking.

    Hello GuerrillaIM

You may want to check out John Childers at Amazing FREE Tips on how to become a highly paid public speaker.

He offers all sorts of courses at all sorts of prices. I sent for his free Speaking Tips series and I think they're really useful (no affiliate commissions, honest). I have seen him on the stage in London. I think you can learn a great deal just listening to him.

Someday when I have a bit of discretionary income I plan to sign up for one of his courses. I think it will be money well-spent. In the meantime, I stick with his freebies.

    All the best.

    Warmest regards
    Bill

What's wrong with your accent? Lots of people don't like their own accent but, if you're selling stuff to foreigners, you'll often find they like it and consider it rather exotic. For example, to American ears, even Peggy Mitchell sounds appealing.

Hi there - speaking and voice is what I do for a living - and I'm in the UK too - please feel free to contact me. We can have a chat and see what your specific issues are - I'd be delighted to pass on some of my techniques FOC.

The accent can be charming as long as it is understable. The most frequent mistake I see in videos is that people tend to speak to fast which slurs the words.

If you are giving a speech in public you speak at a slower pace than if you are talking to a friend. Many videos would be more effective if the speaker would slow down and clearly speak each word.

I'd suggest practicing with a recorder and then listening to yourself until you find the right tone and pace to use.

This may sound silly, but practice saying tongue twisters clearly to improve your enunciation.

My favorite? "Unique New York", but there are tons more.
