How did you motivate yourself with Internet Marketing when you started out?

Hey everyone,

I'm new here and really new to internet marketing. I'm looking forward to really putting in all the effort necessary to reach my goals but I'm curious to hear from everyone: when you were just starting out with internet marketing, before you had any success, how did you motivate yourself? Or how do you currently motivate yourself?

Looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say!

Peace,
Darren L Carter

The thought of going back to working for a total a**hole and not having the freedom to work how and when I want to work is one of my motivations.

Another one would be working as best I can towards a more comfortable lifestyle.

The motivation was to set records. Being really young and making 5-10,000 would be great and at the time there are not much really young people doing it. I got passed the 5k spot and looking forward.

Starvation is a good motivator. Also be prepared for the long run. The gals and guys that make a lot of money fast is the exception.

First - Change of lifestyle and more freedom and control over what you do and when you do it.

Next - Making your first few sales.

Caution - this is where it can all go wrong for the first time, you think you've cracked it when maybe you haven't just yet?

Finally - getting your own system in place to really start moving forward, seeing results.

Don't get distracted by too many "shiny objects" sort out your plans and go for it!

Thanks for the replies everyone! Really cool to see how everyone motivates themselves.

For me it tends to be working towards my ideal lifestyle and not wanting to work for someone else when I am able to do it better.

Have you ever heard Sylvester Stallones story of how he made it?
There was a video I saw recently where Tony Robbins talks about Sylvester Stalones story and he talk about starvation being his motivator, among others. Really inspiring if you can find the video. I don't have a link but there are tons on youtube for anyone who wants some quick inspiration from that story.

For me the freedom of being my own boss and working the hours I want to work. Like right now. Plus, it was a challenge to try and figure out what did worked. I do know that it does not happen over night, and it is a step at a time if you want to avoid becoming overwhelmed by all the systems that are available to use.

I strongly believe people shouldnt have to work 9 to 5 as slaves wasting their lives away. Unfortunately I'm not going to change that for the rest of society....I can only change my own life, so I am

Besides I make a terrible longterm employee....I just HATE working at a job so much.

    Welcome Darren!

Everyone has great responses that are definitely motivators, but I'd like to offer a slight twist and say that my biggest motivation is actually having fun doing the "work" (it ain't work if you're having fun!)

Yes, effort is definitely required. Discipline is required. But make sure you find ways to make all of that fun...or at least interesting.

Too often "motivation" means "forcing myself to do something I don't want to do". That's just painful.

Create products you love, serve a market you care about, even promote affiliate offers for products you believe in, and it won't seem so much like "work".

After 17 years of running gas stations/auto repair shops, I knew I needed a new career. I started marketing online in 2007, earned $3K my first month and that was all the motivation I needed. I saw that it could work, it was real and that I could get good at it.
It's still a learning curve everyday and that is what makes it exciting and fun.

After nearly 20 years with my company they've done away with Christmas bonuses and reduced our yearly increases to almost nothing. You could say "well the economy is tough", but they are raking in more than they ever have and I've heard that our bonuses are hanging on the wall at corporate in the form of expensive paintings. They will never know the work I did for them on cold nights when they were snug in their beds.

I used to be proud of myself and my place in the company. Now it's just a job. I need to be proud of myself again.

My motivation is simply the love of sitting at my computer in the comfort of my home office and making money without commuting in heavy traffic every day to a big office building, working for an idiot boss, living constantly in fear of being laid off, having my time and talent wasted making other people wealthy, and working with incompetent unmotivated co-workers whose only goal in life is getting to the weekend.

Find a reason you need to be successful.. Something that will push you to do more and want more.. Something that gets you excited and out of bed in the morning.. Once you find that reason/reasons; You won't stop until you achieve your goals..

Good luck to you and your success. Hopefully we'll be able to work together in the near future.

Motivation never was my problem, since I always wanted to make some good money without a regular job, have free time to spend with friends and family, etc...

However, I had a big problem that stopped me from making money online for 2 years. Focus. I was always jumping from one system to another and never focused on one thing for a few weeks or even months. So this is the best advice I can give you: choose a system that's proven to work and keep focused on it until you start making some money. If you want to make money online you need to master a specific method, and it's not possible if you're not persistent.

You have to have a mind set that it's not easy money. It is work. Real work. Once you get started, keep up with it because when you become lax, that's when you will stop making the money.

You're completely right. I haven't gotten any success yet with internet marketing but it wasn't until about a year and a half ago that I realize that to be successful at ANYTHING I was going to have to commit myself to working hard. Before that I used to think talent and success was all luck and natural skill.

I agree that starvation, bills and the success of others are good motivation. But the greatest motivation I have is being able to give my mom some of the things that she never had because she used all of her money raising me. I want my future family to have it a little easier than I had it, but still know the value of hard work. Giving back to people is the best motivation!

The power of vision. I love to help people overcome their lives, so when I had a hard time with no money, and all people telling me is not possible, then the passion and love of my vision gave me the courage to continue my efforts. This month I generated 10,000 dollars with almost no effort.

But took me swear and tears for first 2 years, working 12 hours a day in my computer without results. Yeah, I had selfish motivations also, like paying the bills, and freedom, I hate to work for others, but nothing happened, until the passion of my vision, the dream, burned my desire.

It´s important not only looking for selfish purpose, but vision, and a dream.

Sometimes things look bad and disappointment arise in our mind. In that moments I look over at my goals and try to do some relaxing, keeping the momentum! Then I remember statement that says: ”Those who conquer the mind, will conquer the world”.

I agree. When you are trying to start your own online business it can get discouraging but when you find a system that really works. I am currently a member of an affiliate program that is really working well.

Whenever you feel down, just go check out the great many success stories that IMC have created.
This one strategy alone certainly help to keep me motivated.

I did not motivate myself or hype myself up.

I set a goal and stuck with it. One goal was exactly how much time I minimum had to spend focused on the project per day.

Motivation for me comes through see progress.

Thanks for starting this thread Darren! I'm a newbie too and have really enjoyed reading this.

I do have one question for everyone....who do you trust???? Everyone always advises not to jump from one opportunity to the other....find something and stick with it. It sounds like the best way to go however....how do you find the right plan???? How do you know who to trust?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Jaqs, as far as who to trust.. I honestly haven't made much money since I've started with Internet Marketing and couldn't recommend anybody specific.. But when I see others succeeding, I know I can achieve the same results and do even better.. But just remember, ALWAYS constantly learn.. Whether you think you understand something or not, everybody has something to offer you. Of course there will be those whose input is irrelevant and negative, but don't pay any attention to that kind of stuff.

Weed out who is offering you a helping hand, and those that are in it for other reasons. Of course, Everyone wants to make money.. But some truly want to help as well..

If you help others achieve what they want, eventually in return, you WILL receive what you want.

And unfortunately, it's hard to weed out who to trust.. But get your feet wet first, and never quit.. And eventually you'll make it..

      Cheers.:p

Even though I am just a newbie as well I definitely think it is all about your mindset and who and what you choose to surround yourself with. It is very important to keep a focused and concentrated mind and also have a plan of action in place especially in internet marketing.

Really gr8 thread Daren. Thanks for prompting such useful info. from people who have experience in online marketing. I am also just starting out and often times i find i need some motivation. Like Anna said, i also believe it all comes down to one's mindset. How badly do you want to succeed. I can tell you I really really need to succeed. No matter how hard it gets don't we need to succeed?...do our own thing, and get good money being our own boss. I am guessing we do.

Thanks every one for sharing your thoughts.
