Are us.com domain names essentially worthless?

Warriors,

Last night I thought I stumbled upon an exact match domain gold mine with the new us.com TLD.

The entire time I knew it was too good to be true.

I eventaully ended up checking out us.com and noticed it has a web page on it.

So enom basically sold me a freakin sub domain at $9.00/year a pop.

Man do I feel like an idiot.

Has anyone had any luck with ranking us.com domains or is it a complete waste of time?

Thanks!
Dan

I once worked with someone who had a few of those domains ranked relatively well, but never as well as he had expected.

I have also seen a few affiliates of ours do decently well with a us.com domain for one or two of our products, so I wouldnt be inclined to say they are absolutely useless. However, there are better alternatives to look into first to say the least.

If you feel ripped off and end up deciding that it is useless, at least you can take solace in the fact that it only set you back $9. I, as well as many other marketers on here, have spent far more than that on useless tools, products, offers, and advertisements.

    Live and learn I guess....

      Were these using EMDs?

Unfortunately I spent a hell of a lot more than $9 hahah. I went on a buy-up spree.

I also got a exact match domain .us on a pretty big keyword. I set up a WP on it, put some content on it, and within a few days it was #1 on yahoo with 0 backlinks. Now, yahoo doesn't get much traffic, but I manage about 100 uniques a day with 0 backlinks. Not bad for doing nothing.

Funny thing is that the sites below me on yahoo are the sites that are on the first page of google with hundreds and thousands of backlinks. Meanwhile, I'm not even in the top 200 on google.

So what does this tell us about .US domains and yahoo.com? Maybe something, maybe nothing.

In a few instances, yes those were examples of using exact match domains based on product names.

Buy up sprees happen to the best of us....at least you didnt go on one for expensive designer shoes, which my wife seems to want to do on a daily basis...

Hah! Luckily I wasn't on my ADD medicine or else I would have blasted through at least a $1,000 in domains lol.

I bought up so many awesome names, too bad...:

      golfclubs.us.com
      roadbikes.us.com
      blogging.us.com

OMG would have been worth so much freaking money if they weren't crappy sub domains!!!

      Oh well

        Daniel,

A few websites are doing good using the .us as part of their name. (runfrom.us.com would be an off the top of the head example)

I think it's how you promote it that would make or break the domain.

It's probably not the best choice for a domain extension, but there are worse ones.

To the best of my knowledge, there are NO "us.com" domains. Like you said, they would have to be recognized as THIRD level domains!

There ARE .us and there ARE .com, so won't people get confused by .us.com? If they have to type it in....

  • It's a waste of time... better find exact .com,.net or .org domain and work on it.

    Daniel,

If you fell for this - that is saying a lot - there must be a huge swathe of newbies out there who go for these domains, day in day out.

Whilst this might not be the best SEO wise - at least your domains are short and easy to read?

Yeah - it was totally misleading. They presented it along with the .com, .net, and .org as if it were some type of new domain name or something. Definitely feel like a schmuck for buying into those.

Knew it was too good to be true, but bought them anyway. Oh well. Lesson learned

I seem to remember the us.com guys coming around and trying to peddle this stuff a while back. A complete waste of money, even the humble .ws is better.

There is some confusion here though between the scam you bought (domain.us.com) and the actual .us extension (domain.us). The latter is a good way to grab a keyword domain that is not available in net, org or com - if and only if you are targeting the US market. I think .us will gain recognition in the future as .com becomes more international and as people get used to the idea of country specific tlds (cctlds). The US is the last country to jump on the cctld bandwagon, but I think the day will come. In the meantime, there are some great domains available for cheap.

If you plan to keep a website for any length of time, you might want to avoid cctlds from tiny and unstable countries. They might change their rules on a whim, and you'd either be out of a domain name or find your renewal fees skyrocket.
