Fed up of Failure with Affiliate Marketing

Hello Warrirors,

I recently completed my college course in IT and I'm really interested in earning a income from affiliate marketing online but so far all my attempts have failed totally, I don't know what I'm doing wrong and I'm not particularly interested in getting started in "Article" marketing,

Types of sites I've tried

* Top 10 Sites
* Blog Sites (Computer Related)
* Review Sites

I recently started trying to promote certain products as a Amazon Affiliate, I followed a tutorial from a ebook I bought on here by a guy called Rob but no success yet with that. (Such as buying nikoncoolpix-px8camera.com (example) )

I'm pulling my hair out and struggling to understand why people with no computer knowledge can pull off making a living online and I cant...

I've run and sold a successful hosting company with over 12 thousand clients that I had to sell to help out a family member financially but I don't particularly want to ever go back into hosting after seeing people's results with affiliate marketing and that it takes so long to get started.

The only thing I've had success with is with proxy websites, but I really want to get into affiliate marketing

I have an accepted account at CJ.com and I've earned about £10 in about 6 months, that probably doesn't even cover the electric that I used to produce that site.

Does anyone have any suggestions or know any mentors that could help me out of this situation?

The few things I have is a lot of free time, and as I'm living with my parents as I just completed my college course I don't have to pay any bills apart from my server hosting - So I believe I'm in a very good situation to learn.

Sounds like you had some serious success with your hosting company. Hope you made some good money when you sold it.

Look into offervault.com. They have a ton of affiliate products and CPA stuff that you can check out and sign up for. The coolest thing about offer vault is you can click an area that shows you all of the top paying products you can promote.

Begin promoting something that has at least $100 per sale commission and begin building websites to promote the product.

Grab some keywords that you think you can compete in for targeting and build some blogs with those keywords. If you don't want to do article marketing, pay someone to write some articles for you. You can find people who will write articles for dirt cheap.

    Hope that helps...

Well, first of all - if someone told you to buy domain names that have a trademarked name in them, you can just toss the entire e-book out. Don't ever buy a domain name that contains a trademarked name (i.e., nikon) if you plan on using the site to promote the products or the trademarked item.

There's plenty of good advice in these forums. If you have time, then start reading. I suggest also that 30 Day Challenge, which is an excellent place for beginners to learn the basics. You can find a lot of information here at WF about the 30DC, as well. My advice regarding it is basically use what's free, use the free trials, but otherwise watch your money.

Find ONE THING. Make money on it. Scale it up.

I like to apply a theory of constraints approach.

Figure what ONE thing is holding you back from sales and then fix that.

For example if your not getting any traffic then you can't convert, so there's no point in even looking at why you're not converting...

...the constraint is the traffic. Focus on getting traffic. Then once you get the traffic look at your landing page and so on... keep on iterating. (this is an example)

AND look in to the Online Commercial Intent (OCI) of the keywords that people are being referred from google with...

Avoid thinking of it as "get rich quick."

You've got to learn how to MARKET.

      MARKET.

I wrote an Ebook that breaks it all down at my personal website. (P.S. I have nothing to sell - I wrote that book more for myself than for anybody else).

I'm about to launch my "real" site soon, the one that's going to make millions.

Start asking clear questions if you have no clue what you're doing - we can provide solid answers.

  • The problem I see is you are trying to many things. Pick something and see it through. A lot of times people quit a project too early.

This stuff is harf, but if you can learn to hang on to your projects you will become successful.

Charles hit the bull's eye. Stick to one project and complete it. Build traffic to it and within less time then you think you will see good results. You just have to stick with it and do something everyday.

Hey man....this poster has the right idea. One of the biggest problems brand new affiliate marketers have is they lose focus. Either lose focus on a particular method (system) of affiliate marketing and don't see it through. Or lose focus on the products you are marketing. What I mean by that is your try to market so many different products at once, you can't concentrate on 1 or 2 to make them successful first before moving on to the next.

Keep the faith bro. Pick a system that works and stick to it. You might have to experiment with more than one marketing system until you find the one that fits you.

Good luck man, you can do it!

The main thing is to find something that your interested in.

Make sure you know quite a bit about the product your selling.

You dont want to look like a total idiot to the people on your list.

First off get in before the launch then go hard on promoting.

Stay focused and consistent with promoting.

Just dont try to sell the product get them on a list.

Give away a free video or a free book relating to the product.

Even do an interview with the product owner.

I use youtube to spread the word which works rather well.

Twitter is another venue i use to get people ready for the launch.

The objective is to get as many people on your list prior to the launch date and make sure you give them value before you sell them that product.

If you need any help just send me a pm or you can email me at craig@craigcaron.com

I couldn't agree more. I'm a software engineer with nearly 30 years of IT experience. I started IM about 6 months ago. I've learned that most of this business has little to do with IT. It's a generalization, even a stereotype to say what I'm about to say but these stereotypes don't exist without reason. IT professionals tend to come from a totally different mindset and tend to belong to a totally opposite personality type than Marketing professionals.

We tend to be more introverted and more computer oriented, whereas Marketing professionals almost by definition tend to be "people persons". This makes the world of IM particularly challenging and frustrating for us. We tend to focus on numbers and statistics at the expense of human factors.

That said, it doesn't mean we can't be successful. It just means we need to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses, outsource those things we tend not to be good at, like social updating and copy writing, and spend our time working on things we are good at, such as building good websites or automation tools and systems.

Lot's of IMers are great at the social tasks like copy writing and social updating, but awful at the tech side. They tend to outsource those kinds of tasks to people like us. It works both ways.

This is, in a nutshell, what i am doing...with the following exceptions:

I don't care about competition anymore - and i hardly use 3rd party sites like blogger, squidoo - it's ALL about making good sites using Wordpress.

The rest is tedious and constant link building. For keywords, as a start i recommend keyword-phrases consisting of 3 words..make sure they have PLENTY of search volume otherwise you will never see good traffic.

You got some solid advice in this thread so I'm not going to repeat any of it.
I would like to add my 2 bits

Why should people buy from you?

There are many people online trying to sell the same stuff that you are. So why should people buy from you? - Because it is you! Show them you, your uniqueness, and if they like you - they will buy from you.

Here is a great presentation video I saw on TED the other day. It's 18 minutes and worth every minute of it: Simon Sinek: How great leaders inspire action | Video on TED.com

Oh, and one more thing... If you are after the money then this is what people will see from you. That will push them off. Be about giving people solutions to problems (or filling their needs). People need to get to know you, like you and trust you. The technical stuff will sort itself over time.

    I hope that helped

I know a coach who can help you make a TON of money.

    Your problem is..

You don't know how to choose a product and a niche.

You don't know how to prepare a strategy that works for you every time you wish to make money.

You seem to be unclear about many things and you want someone who will take you by the hand to help you make money online as an affiliate marketer.

If you want a coach, PM me your email address or send an email to wilbertburch13 @ gmail dot com. I'll send you an email with his details. You can take it forward after that with him.

I am sure you will LOVE making money online after that.

I think perhaps I've been going half way through a website idea and finding a new one and starting that.

I would love a mentor but I'm always concerned if they will get me to purchase $1000 worth of software with there own affiliate link (I already bought lots of software thanks ebooks, most of it is useless)

I think I'm going to release a ebook on how to make profit from proxy's as thats my most successful thing currently.

But then, how are you going to market it?

Not trying to discourage you, if the above is the path you want to take, but if your problem is that you're not good at marketing (which is fine, as long as you acknowledge it and work to improve it), then switching your business model isn't going to suddenly change that.

In other words, if you're not good at marketing someone else's product online, then what makes you think you'll be good at marketing your own? The only real advantage as a product owner is that you can recruit affiliates to sell for you, but that in itself is a marketing project. Plus you'll want to have sales materials (email templates, banners, pre-sell copy, etc.) so that they won't see promoting your products as a lot of "work".

Again, not trying to discourage you, but those are things I'd consider before jumping into another business model. If your problem is that you don't know how to market, then why not learn how to market? Based on your original post, if your problem is that you're not getting much traffic (and assuming your relying on SEO for traffic) then your problem is either that you chose poor keywords - too much competition, not enough searches, etc. Or, your on page SEO needs work, OR you need to build more and better links to your site so that it ranks higher. Likewise, if you're getting significant consistent traffic, but no conversions, then the problem could be your pre-sell content or the layout of your site. All those things are fixable, but you'll never know if you abandon those sites for another project.

So my advice: Learn marketing. Once you understand that, you can make any business model work.

    Super noob,

Have patience young grass hopper (Just kidding)

What I recommend you to do is learn some copywriting and start promoting leads for easy conversation (like dating leads). Even at $5 per lead, you'll be happy when you see a steady flow of money.

What I like do is either a landing page, or I put them into my dating list and recommend then a dating website using 3-6 emails promos.

Whatever you do, don't give up. Put 60 minutes a day into this, or take 1 week break. It took me awhile to get the hang out of, I'm happy I did because checks in the mail every month for the win.

    I hope this helps

The best place to start is choosing a Niche that you are interested in and creating and/or promoting products in that niche.

Niche Marketing is great in that you can start with a very narrowed down product line to promote, and your intended audience is hence, also a very narrow subset of people. You learn as you dig further into any particular niche, and as you work forwards, you keep getting more and more to grips with it, it builds your confidence, boosts your creativity, and improves your own personal results before everything else.

There are only a few very advanced niche marketing tools out there that can tell you what niches are best to invest in. I was attending a Webinar by a very very well known Internet Marketer "Anik Singal" (he's been in BusinessWeek's Top 25 Young Entrepreneurs) just yesterday where he was telling all his students and others like me about niche marketing and the latest tools out there that can help people start out in the right direction.

Google something like "anik singal curt dalton webinar" to read up on it. I think it was an extremely useful session for everyone who attended. (Attendance was free).

    All the best~

Choose a niche you are interested in (people will notice whether you are passionate about something or not) and stick with it.

I've been making hundredths of dollars every month for the past year just by writing Adwords-advertisements and SEO texts for big companies. Now I'm going to try and promote/sell stuff myself using these skills. Of course, I still need to learn!! Like building backlinks, getting traffic to my website (apart from keyword-rich texts)... I've given myself like a year to learn and implement that stuff.

But mind you, it took me a lot of work and motivation in order to get to that point of making money by writing for big companies. I guess it'll be the same in IM. Just believe in it and don't give up too soon.

Hey Supernoob, don't worry. It's tough, you'll get there.

It all depends on what you're selling, and to whom. The more tangible the product you're promoting ,the easier it is. But when you're selling information, it takes a whole new skill level to make sales.

If you've made good money in business previously, then you probably have that skill already, so don't give up.

    You just need two things:

    TRAFFIC
OFFERS THAT BREAK EVEN ON THAT TRAFFIC (and are relevant to the people seeing them)

It really can be that simple. It only gets complicated when folks start trying to sell meat to vegans.

First off don’t feel bad because you have computer knowledge and struggling with Affiliate Marketing. Affiliate Marketing success doesn’t really have much to do with “computer knowledge”. Otherwise people like me would NEVER be successful.

Success in this business has more to do with the following:
    1) Find a hot niche.
A hot niche is what people WANT, and what people want is what sells.
    2) If you don’t like to write articles, you might want to outsource this job for you if you can. Because affiliate marketing does involve lot of writing. I don’t know of anything that would replace the success I get from article writing.
    3) You shouldn’t be a source of selling, but a source of information. The more you inform and the less you sell, the more you will MAKE sales.
This is the basics of success that I have learned for myself.

If you think you are doing everything you suppose to do but you are not seeing any result, then I have a question for you:

Have you done the right thing for 4 years? If your answer is yes, then QUIT! But I know you have not done everything you suppose to do for 4 years, so please hang on because nothing good comes easy.

Here is a question - have you made even 1 dollar (or pound, euro, whatever)?

If the answer is no, then by all means you are not cut out for this. On the other hand, if you did make at least one monetary unit, then ask yourself (and if possible, as you customer) why?

If you can make 1, you can make 2, and if 2, then why not 4? You see where this is going?

The problem is you need the right data. Affiliate marketing is about having and using the correct data.

1.) What products are selling in what niches
2.) What products in the niches that I am interested in are of high quality, and which ones are total crap - refunds are a bitch!
3.) How popular is the product I am selling, how well known?
4.) How will I create rich content with quality key-words so I can drive traffic to my sites, pages, reviews, etc?
5.) What has already been written about the product in article sites, review sites, forums, etc?
6.) Where can I get quality test, images, videos, audio and any other content to create my site/page/email campaign?
7.) What can I use to differentiate my offerings from everyone else who is in this business?

If you don't have the correct data, if you don't know the answer to the "whys?" then you are shooting in the dark. Sure, from time to time you will accidentally hit the right thing (even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time to time).

Data turns on the lights. Get good data.

I've made the odd tiny bit of money,

Can anyone show me there affiliate site as an example, I think if I saw one I could copy the same technique but apply it to another niche, does anyone have any examples, or seen any random ones like your own on the Internet that you can show me?

I don't want to get too far off the subject matter, but I noticed that txconx said "Don't ever buy a domain name that contains a trademarked name"

Is this only because of competition with the actual company itself or is it more than that? Because I have a site with a company name, but I'm about to use it as an Amazon Affiliate. Of course if the company asks me to stop, I'd have to.

And to the OP, don't be too hard on yourself. Affiliate marketing is something I've looked into for a while now, and it's got a LOT to it. There's a bunch of different methods and it seems to me that it sort of comes down to what is the easiest for you, and that way you'll stay with it.

He says that because you can put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into building it up only for the company sue you for trademark infringement. Most of the time, they'll be happy to take the domain away from you but it could go further.

Registering a trademark in your domain name is just risky, that's all.

I have a real live experience with trademark domain, i run a niche site with a trademark name in the domain, and the ranking goes from #9 to #3, and i am sure it will go up to #1 for the longtail keyword, but suddenly a law firm contact me on behalf of the trademark client wanted to take back the domain.

so it is not worth to take the risk, because one day later you are going to lose all your previous work for the website.

      ok, back to this thread,

I run web hosting business too, but never reach the success like you, good job man...

for affiliate marketing, i think you should go back to the basis for niche keyword research, because if you are targeting something very board, you are not possible to compete with others very fast.

    Well,

That ebook told me to purchuse the item's name, and add links to amazon from it and then to use Unique Article Wizard and simply leave it to make money, no such luck yet.

Can anyone show me there own site? I need to get an idea of what they look like as I have a feeling that buying the 'product name' of a site and using unique article wizard feels kinda tatty?

    Hi Supernoob,

I'd say stop looking in the "secret tricks" or "special ops" departments and take a good look at how most affiliates are making money online.

By that I mean just take a look at some real websites that get decent traffic, have been around for a couple of years and have affiliate offers, then it's pretty easy to see how you can make it work.

The "secret" is in putting the effort in and building your website or content up. Choosing the right keywords and all that other stuff helps a lot but there are some other factors that don't get talked about much because it doesn't help sell IM products.

If you want a real affiliate marketing course you don't have to look far,

    All the best,

      Hi Supernoob,

I was just like you about 2 months ago and I watched a video online (don't remember were) but all it said was "don't think, do!

So I focused on doing GOOD keyword research for 2 days. Brainstorming about things that I enjoy. I then registered a Domain that I thought sounded good and in which I could fill with content that I would like to read/make myself.

I then started to design a website and it took about 2 days and I was tweaking this and that..... I asked my friend and she said something that I am forever thankful for.... "how can I recomend changes to the design when I don't even know what it looks like?" I said, well it is right infront of your eyes... she "but there is no content, fill it with content first and then do the minor adjustments/tweaks to the design". I started to fill it up with content and today it has been live for 30 days and I see an increasing number of visitors everyday.... Right now its steady at 150/day but it's increasing a little everyday...

Focus on one thing and just do it! If you do not know how to promote your site. Google or search in this forum "how to get traffic" and look for a plan and follow it.... if it says "how to get 200 visitors in one month" give it one month and just go for it!

      Just do it!

      Good Luck!

      Jute

    Types of sites I've tried

    * Top 10 Sites
    * Blog Sites (Computer Related)
    * Review Sites

You had success online outside of affiliate marketing. Why get into affiliate marketing if you're good at something else? Honestly, being an affiliate is not for everybody!

It's all about finding the best type of niche that you gel with. Then you don't give up at the first sign of adversity.

It's like something that I heard Brian Tracy say, "get in line and stay in line." He just means that if you got in line at a buffet, no one will make you get out of line if you remain there. Then if you wait, you will eventually get to the front of the line where the good stuff is. Very sound advice I think.

The problem is that most people have A.D.D. and keep getting out of line...

    Hi Guys!

I thought I'd return to update you all on my success! I never stopped trying infact I now own over 350+ domains but it was all worth it to find the ONE that works that golden nugget.

I'm now successfully earning a consistent £130-£200 a day online as I hit gold on one of my sites I'm now duplicating that method over and over. I've ordered my Audi already and hopefully the success will continue.

Just one thing though I wasted so much money on ebooks - No one is going to tell you there secret (So dont ask me) you have to keep experimenting till you find one that works! Don't believe every eBook most people are simply out to sell you the dream I discovered my goldmine by digging without a guide.

To anyone else reading this thread don't give up on the dream it is achieveable.

All of you guys in this thread helped me, also Motivational Speakers helped too as you can get pretty down when you've made nothing for months.

Just a few quick things that come to mind.

First, you might be better off packaging up and selling what you know about running a hosting company and selling that as an info product if you need cash flow quick. I mean you got some real knowledge people would want to know about. Tell people what worked and what didn't.

Now regarding affiliate marketing, the best success I've had with it has been using paid traffic. Thats not a knock to free traffic, I just never gave free traffic enough effort to see if its worth while.

One of the biggest things I learned however is that the best way to learn what actually works in affiliate marketing is to observe and reverse engineer what others are doing. You'll see pretty quickly little nuances and tactics being use on "the field" not mentioned in ebooks or courses. Learning by watching the dudes in the trenches is where it's at.

In my experience ebooks are good to give you the foundation or fundamentals with a few extra tidbits. The rest you'll need to learn from experience or through observation and reverse engineering or better yet both.

Leverage the time, energy and effort of others already doing what you want to do and then figure out what you can do differently or improve on by finding the gaps in their strategy or approach.

Now learning how to reverse engineer other marketers is a skill unto itself. People teach some aspects of it, but the real hardcore tactics are not talked about on forums or put into ebooks because there being used by the people who know them to earn money.

Congratulations on your success, and many more to come! I agree with you. I have read so many ebooks, bought so many programs and still trying to understand all this internet stuff. For someone who is looking to move forward, it is a long and hard struggle. Everytime I think I understand what I am supposed to do, I learn that I don't have a clue. But that doesn't stop me from trying to move forward.

I also agree, that is it lonely and challenging to grasp things you need to do. Every little thing I do, I get stopped dead in my tracks saying "what?" lol.

From my experience to be successful in Affiliate marketing you have to take as a real business. I mean do a proper plan ,a long term plan. Affiliate marketing is not a get rich quick scheme.

What I've found works well is this:

1- Find a niche that best suits your skill,passion,..
2- Find a way to position yourself in that niche as an expert by providing solution to problems.
3- Build a list of people looking for answers in that niche.
4- Overwhelm your subscribers with great products. At the beginning give them some great stuff FREE.
5-Promote affiliate products using email marketing.

This may take some time but if you do it correctly my friend You'll be smiling to the bank.

It took me 4 years to really understand that.

Just thought I'd update this thread as I've had a few private messages from people who found it on Google.

The time I've invested in my websites to make them large authority ones has paid off, but it's a constant battle and one thing I've noticed is when companies see an affiliate making thousands per month they'll make up any excuse to knock you off and do it themselves, because of this it's been a constant battle to find new companies and ideas, it feels to me as if your constantly on thin ice that could crack at any second, all my websites are a mix of Amazon, AdSense and Affiliate Marketing and even a little direct advertising such as I phone a company and say do you want to advertise on my site for £500 a month.

This is why I recommend you diversify your income, instead of having 5 companies providing your entire income, try spread it between 50, then if you lose one or two its less of a hit, also once your website hits it's prime sell it on Flippa, I've done this a few times it provides a nice bit of capital for your next project.

Good luck to anyone else wanting to become an affiliate, don't be tricked into thinking its easy. This job is harder than any 9-5 job, but it will give you many more benefits and when its all going well you can go on a holiday for months on end, think outside of the box, and at products before they've been released so you get a head start .

If I were you I would just focus mainly on the free traffic. If you do not have much money to risk it is the best way to go. You should definitely not give up your goals of making money online. Believe me when I first started marketing I made nothing initially. It took tons of trial and error just to make a thousand a month. Eventually you will get there. I stress this a lot but you really need to need to utilize facebook and twitter more. There is an incredible amount of free traffic between them. So much money out there to be made.
