why are my subscribers not confirming?

I'm getting really frustrated with this list building thing. I have a sign up for a newsletter on my website. I've had several people sign up but NO confirmations. Not one! It's a double opt-in. I thought that was strange, so I tried it out, and I hadn't configured it correctly. So after spending an entire day figuring out how to make it run smoothly, I finally got it up and running. I've had several MORE people sign up since then, but not ONE confirmation! Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? Should I just skip the double opt in and just use single? Or is there particular wording that makes people more apt to confirm?

Suggestions appreciate

What are you telling your people when they click the subscribe button? (As in, what link do they go to and what does it say there).

Are you giving something of value away as a bribe? Do they need to confirm before they get the goody or do they get it as soon as they click the submit button?

Are you telling them EXACTLY what to do???? If you are not telling them to check their email for a confirmation email and to click the link in it, why would they????

I did a study for the last company that I worked for where we tested and polled about 40K people in regards to how they felt about their email address(es) and the information we gathered was rather interesting.

Out of that group, seems that people (nowadays) view their email address pretty much like their phone numbers; (interesting enough, people tend to guard their email address more so than their cell phone number -- go figure).

That being understood; there never is a "one size fits all" scenario when it comes to Internet Marketing. You'll need to test any hypothesis you might come up with; (i.e.: should you go with single opt-in or stick with double opt-in); before you can come up with a sound theory. So, basically any answer you receive on this forum that states "you should do this" will be served to you from insufficient data; as they're not in your business, (and possibly not in your niche).

Test, test, test... there you will find your answers, my friend.

Are you using an outside service such as Aweber to handle things or are you using an opt-in script?

I'm using a plug in... I've tested it, and after a few screw ups, I finally got things working correctly, but the only confirmed ones I have our mine! And I've had several people sign up after I made the corrections, but they still didn't confirm! I tweaked the message to say that they needed to confirm and click here for their free report, then they'll get a thank you message with the link to the report. Maybe that will help???

First, you want to be sure you are not chasing your tail. Ask a friend to try filling out your sign-up form to see if the plug-in is functioning stem to stern. If you are inclined, you could post the domain name in this thread and a few of us here could try your optin form as well. Even though you are receiving the confirmation page, you should test to make sure the confirmation is in fact being sent out.

Ok. I signed up for your newletter as DeadGuy... so you should be able to find me there. No confirmation email was received on this end. Nice site by the way.

Are you sure that they are getting the confirmation emails?

I like to test a new autoresponder by signing up myself
from several different email account just to see how
the message would appear on different platforms and
    check deliver-ability.

You may need to do the same.

I signed up as "Warrior Tester" I'll let you know if I
    get the confirmation email.

Therein seems to lie the problem - I signed up more than 10 minutes ago and didn't get a confirmation email (I've checked my spam as well). Normally if I don't get the confirmation email in the first few minutes I forget what I've signed up for.

An audio or video message might also work better when instructing your subscribers how to confirm.

Then I would suggest that you go to single opt in for now on.

thanks for testing. I appreciate it. I'll delete you from the list as soon as I can confirm that it's working!!!! I guess I could do single opt in, but I wanted to go with double. But at this rate, I might not have a choice.

Create a very well designed yet very simple and easy to understand "how to confirm your subscription" page right after they opt in. This will send your confirmation rates soaring.

Yes, but you're also giving up PRIME website real estate.

The page after opt-in is perfect for making a great offer.

A prospect is hottest the fresher they are. They're freshest right when they opt-in and that's a great place to make a sale or commission.

So, basically my confirmation email is taking too long... I guess I'll just use another script or try the single opt in... Thank you everyone who tested this for me. I'll go through and delete you all. I didn't want to use aweber just yet, but I guess I'm just going to have to do it. I haven't made one sale yet, and I was really hoping to before going with them. Oh, well. If it doesn't work I guess I could always cancel with them...

    Thanks again.

ISP filter a lot of email, most dont arrive and if they do they arrive in the wrong folder and people dont have the time or patience to go searching.

With just a few people signing up, it's kinda hard to tell if it's a fluke or if there's actually something wrong with your signup process. A lot of times though, your subscribers are going to need an incentive to confirm their opt-in.

Or like a couple people have said, and what I recommend, is that you just set up your list to single opt-in and don't make your prospects jump through hoops to hear from you.

Thank you to everyone who signed up. Deadguy and warrior tester, I removed you from my list. If anyone else tried let me know so I can remove you as well. For now I went with the single opt-in, although now I'm concerned that people aren't even going to get my emails. So... I'm going to search for another newsletter plug in. Anyone know of a good free one?
