A URL Question - How Long Is TOO Long

Ive been doing some keyword research for a specific niche and ive found some great long tail keywords.

One of them gets a suprisingly high number of searches [exact] and its a buying keyword if you like so i thought the url would already be taken but its not.

BUT, the keyword is 8 words long and although a good few of the words are only 2 and 3 letters long, the url looks wrong to me. keywordkeywordkeyword.com etc just looks a mess because of the 8 words and keyword-keyword-keyword etc looks far too long.

Maybe thats why the url is available, i dunno.

Ive tried shortening it with fewer words but the searches drop for all results apart from 1 but that url is already taken across all extensions.

Maybe i should just get the .info and do some testing

Does anybody have a specific general rule of thumb they go by as far as how long or many words their url should be?

Kris

8 words does seem quite long. Hopefully, the search volume data is accurate on this one.

I have never had a site with such a long URL, but certainly some with multi-word URLs on the long side. I think it doesn't really matter, since we hardly ever type manual URLs anymore.
Assuming that it's a really good KW and the data is accurate, I'd go for it.

      Thanks for the reply Shane

Ive tried cross referencing the info with different keyword tools, both free and software and they all pull up similar results for this particular keyword but i think market samurai keys its info from google anyway so i presumed those two comparisions would match anyway

Just do a search for 'the longest domain name in the world' and look at the length of the domains to see if it matters

Some corkers on the first page there

Ive went ahead and registered the url anyway but i was just wondering whether anybody with a long url had any good/bad results with it

I guess i'll just do some testing

if its an adsence site which i suspect it is.

then it dosnt matter the domain is only for seo

people generally dont generally visit adsence sites more than once. they find what they want and go and hopefully click an add

short domains are only good for site you want return visits to, or sites you want people to spread via word of mouth
