Where do I get started???

I'm a newbie to internet marketing and not sure what to do first. I'm not interested in PPC marketing where I need to invest money upfront, and I love to write, but not sleazy, "slick" feeling marketing stuff. Affiliate marketing sounds interesting, but I don't know much about it. So where does a down-to-earth, honest person who wants to make money online go? And what do people mean when they talk about "hard" work? I don't mind working hard, but I'd love to hear what people have to say about what is hard... is it the technical aspects, writing aspects, what?

Thanks for advice!

What business are you starting? which market are you in?

Without knowing what you're trying to achieve it's impossible to give you useful advice.

Like Andy said it's SO important to figure out what and why you're doing business online.

Do some research to find a target market that you would enjoy getting into.

Then figure out the problems that people are having in that market and find ways to solve them. It could be with information or software or services, whatever direction you want to take your business.

Instead of trying to figure out the means of marketing something (PPC, article marketing) you need to figure out what market you're going into and create a business around helping the people in that market.

Firstly, you need to figure out what your niche is. Personally I outsource various services to make some income from home. You can find a detailed video that I post on the forum a couple day ago. You can find the video in my signature link.

So where does a down-to-earth, honest person who wants to make money online go?
down to earth ....hmmm hang out here for a while and we'll fix that !!!

And what do people mean when they talk about "hard" work? I don't mind working hard, but I'd love to hear what people have to say about what is hard... is it the technical aspects, writing aspects, what?
Hard work usually equates to long hours as nothing we do online is physically "hard", heavy, or something that breaks a sweat.

There is no such thing as a "fast buck"
I always laugh when I read about "$59,000 earned in 47 minutes"

They fail to tell you the numbers of hours, days or weeks, invested to create the product, produce the infrastructure (sales page, ordering system, etc), write the sales and supporting copy etc.

So, having said that if you are a newbie be prepared to spend lots of hours learning.
Learning about types of income methods, payment systems, websites, traffic generation - all types of things

Hard comes into play because sometimes we have to learn about stuff we truly aren't interested in but have to learn because its part of the sales process or part of the market we are involved in.

Learning stuff you don't care about is "hard"

    Just my opinion....

Welcome to the world of online marketing!

The key to making money is to find a system you like to make money and stick with it. Don't get distracted by the next digital product that promises $10,000 in 2 days. The less distractions you have with other ways to make money online, the better...

Feel free to PM me with any questions.

That is a great ? ACarpentieri!

What I would do first, if I had to start over again, is find the best SOLUTION to a nagging, widely spread PROBLEM!

Then I would do some KEYWORD RESEARCH, and make a simple WEBSITE, optimizing your website for not only the search engines, but also your visitors!

Then I would invest in an AUTO RESPONDER, which would be the last of your expenses, if you know how to do it!

Set up your website so that the only option your visitors have is to give you their NAMES and EMAIL ADDRESSES, in exchange for a FREE GIFT, that you will give them, that helps them solve a problem they are having!

Once your visitors start giving you their names and email addresses, you have started to build your MAILING LIST! So, use your auto responder to send the people on your mailing list their free gift, followed by more valuable, helpful, informative, FREE INFORMATION!

Now the only thing the people on your mailing list has given you, up to this point, is there NAME and EMAIL ADDRESS! In exchange, they got a FREE GIFT, and valuable, helpful, informative, FREE INFORMATION, that provided solutions to their problems!

Now they LOVE U! They are thinking, "Hey, if this person's FREE gift, and FREE information is this good, I wonder how good their PAID products, services, and information is!

PLEASE DO NOT DISAPPOINT THEM! ONLY send them links to PAID products, services, and information that you truely, truely BELIEVE in! That goes for the FREE info you send them as well!

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Debbie, I appreciate you sharing your opinion of "hard" work and that makes sense. I'm pretty sure I can handle the learning curve. I guess the challenge for me is to select something I feel passionate/knowledgeable about and start from there, as I have lots of varied interests on lots of different topics. And I agree with everything you said Matthew, once I figure out what it is I want to do. What a great forum this is... so happy I have found it.

ACarpentieri, you have to decide which skills you have that you don't mind using day in and day out that people are willing to pay you money for. The hard part would be narrowing down those skills if you have a lot of them. Definitely stay focused on what you wind up choosing and don't get distracted by shiny things. Also feel free to pm me if you need help.

Hard work to me is the time I put into it. As my time is not free atleast I dont think of it to be. Some think that you put up a site and just start swimming in a pool of money and sadly its not like that even though I wish it was. It takes time and quite a bit of it.

I hope you don't feel that sales writing is automatically "sleazy." There was a time when I felt that way too, but I got over it - and in fact, I went further and became a sales writer myself.

The long and short of it is that in sales writing, you're appealing to a need or desire that the customer already has, whether they know it or not. You usually can't create a completely new need or desire in a prospect out of total thin air (unless you are a sales genius), although you can certainly make them realize that a need or desire they may have thought they had is better addressed by your offer.

It's not "sleazy" to help people realize that they actually want what you're offering, unless of course you believe you're offering total rubbish. But even then, one man's trash is another's treasure, so who are we to judge? Making money online always involves selling, and any honest offer is no more "sleazy" than going to a job interview (where you sell yourself).

I don't think that all sales writing is "sleazy"- I just dislike all the offers I come across that make an opportunity or product appear like a magic solution and then when a person digs a little deeper they realize the reality is different than the perception. I understand the value of "selling" a potential customer on something, and feel that all of us are either "buying" or "selling" to one another most of the time... I just need to feel good about what I'm recommending and be honest about the product/item. There have been so many times where I've almost bought something because the sales copy was really good, and was thankful I didn't later when I read a review about it online or in this forum.

hey first of all you need to find out which niche you want to go into im into internetmarketing what i would advise is get a coach/mentor you need to learn how to build and run an online business before you start making then after you have done this you will see money in your a/c you can still do affiliate marketing also after you get conifident with what your doing you will begin to think about making your own product like an ebook about your niche see its all about getting a list so i would advise find a great affiliate product that you can sale first get a free product to give away then on the back of that you can sale your affiliate product you can get a free ebook with private rights to give to others online really cheap and sometimes free
        hope this helps

        Thanks

Since your an honest guy and aren't good at writing sleazy. I believe you'll go very far in this business.

Hard work here for one whole year could change your life financially. Hard work at a job takes you no where. So how hard is it really? The tasks aren't so much as hard as they are time consuming or tedious. That's just my opinion though.

Always be open to learn things, and make sure you take everything with a grain of salt. Not every product has your best interest in mind.

You'll probably find 100's of products that are all appealing. Make $1000 in one day or 7 figures in 6 months. Stuff like that, you might want to ask for some reviews before buying something.

You should check out Free Access To Mining Money Online.... You can sign up for FREE. And it explains the basics of everything and you'll have your own site up in no time for free! True basics and the fundamentals you NEED to know before starting anything.

    Hope I helped!
