Next time, I WON'T USE Brandnames!

Well, just when I thought I was on track for my 2 niche sites I recently started, it looks like I gotta turn back around and start over. It's because I just found out that I apparently can't use company names in my domain. I thought it was fine, since I wasn't using the logo, but just looked into it and it looks like even using a name can get you in trouble. It's weird because I've seen other sites out there that use company names, sites that seem to be doing really well. I hate it cause of all of the time wasted, but even worse is that I really think I was on track for page one of Google with both sites. Better yet, one keyword had 27,000 searches a month, and the other had 165,000!

Anyways, I'm wondering about a few things now. This sounds like a dumb question, but what's the best way to take a site down? Just change nameservers? Also, is there a way to keep wordpress installed on those databases, so I can just assign the new domains to them as soon as I get those?

Here's something else. I would sure hate to loose all that work I did writing the articles for one of these sites. If I took the site down, and then put a new site up a few days from now, with those same articles, would Google penalize the new site for using that same material even though the old site would no longer exist? Or better yet, is there some way to "migrate" or "transfer" the old site, including the way the pages are set up and everything, to a new one?

Alright, I know that's a lot to ask. If anyone has any info on this, like always, it's greatly appreciated.

Nathan, there are a lot of good tutorials online which address your questions. Since you specifically mentioned Wordpress, I'd start with the support forum at wordpress.org.

Before you do that, though, have a chat with the tech support people at your web host. They may be able to move the sites for you, and do it very quickly -- as long as you stick with their company. Once you have your new domains, ask them the best way to clone the sites onto the new domains and set up 301 redirects from the old one. The 301 redirect should help preserve your SEO work by telling spiders that the pages have a permanent new home.

By the way, nice job recognizing the problem and being proactive in fixing it. Too many people try to bull their way forward until they get the "cease and desist" letter from the company's legal team.

I recently had a domain accidentally expire because I just forgot I needed to renew. Found new domain and went into cpanel and selected all the files for the old domain and moved them all (Wordpress) to the new domain. The database stays the same so it was a quick and easy move. Then you have to go into the database and change the base urls. If you don't know how to move a site from one domain to another, I have a guide at domainingdiva.com/installationinstructions.pdf

You might try a 301 redirect from old domain to new domain unless you've already gotten a cease and desist letter, in which case, you'll just have to transfer the domain to them or delete it. Depends on who it is really ... Google, Facebook, Ebay are very aggressive at defending their trademarks. Some other companies ... not as much.
