Making payments to Filipino workers?

I prefer using systems like oDesk.com because everything is put together and you can read feedback. I am not a big fan of hiring people off the street, without references.

I don't mind paying 10% to oDesk for piece of mind.

Let's not derail the thread from what the OP asked. He didn't ask how to pay via oDesk.

My answer: PayPal (surprise surprise...)
I was using XOOM also, and they shut out non-USA credit cards, and they cut off the ability to use PayPal. So I was stuck.

I got advice from Dan, John Jonas' partner, to switch to PayPal. If any of my workers didn't already have PayPal connected to a bank account I asked them to go get an EON Card with UnionBank. It costs little to get ($8 USD approx) and it can be connected to paypal easily.

Once they did this, we were easily able to use PayPal.
Until it was all setup I simply used Western Union (expensive, but temporary)

Thanks for your answer, It looks like its a good idea to for me to set that up (I can afford to provide the EON Card, much less of a hassle than bring caught without an alternative.

I've managed teams in the Philippines, and it's not as common as you think for them to have bank accounts, which they need in order to use and link to Paypal. Obviously though if they're going to seek freelance work online, they're going to have to get that set up for themselves.

While most may be able to get a paypal account, not all can get their paypal accounts verified because a credit card is needed to do that there. An unverified paypal account means that they cannot withdraw their money from paypal.
The Unionbank EON is one way to get verified but that can in some cases even be difficult for them to get because of the absence of Unionbank branches in certain localities. There is also the PhP350 annual fee which must be paid upon opening an EON CyberAccount; while it may seem to be a minimal amount, first time outsourcers often do not have any money to speak of.
Western Union would initially be the best option for new outsourcers in the Philippines who do not have bank accounts. Allow them up to three months maximum to set up their paypal and EON accounts.
For those outsourcers who have bank accounts, it may cost you less to send money to them via bank transfer.

PayPal would be the easiest and cheapest way to go. Getting the EON card is quite easy so that shouldn't be a problem. They should be the one to get their EON card if they want to get paid. It will be very useful for them in the future anyway.

Well...you have a point....but if they can't you can help them start to get one.....you can just take out the whole expense from their salary......just to keep it going...... lol...just a suggestion though.....

PayPal has always been my best choice to pay my outsourcers to the Philippines. Alternatively, they're the ones responsible finding for banks that could link their PayPal accounts as well so I got no problems with that.

Paypal no doubt is the best choice.

They can use the Eon Account from Unionbank to verify their accounts.
If that is not possible, another option is to verify the account using Smart Money.

Smart Money is debit card (mastercard) which they can easily get from Smart Communications (A telecom giant here). It only takes a few hours to get a smart
money debit card.

Paying Filipinos is not much of a problem these days. If they still can't get Paypal
then pay them via Western Union, for folks in provinces this is a very popular way
to receive cash.

So somehow you slipped through with the issue...lol..... Great thinking...so basically all you did, whenever somebody calls you from xoom, was to make an excuses other than "payment".....? Is that it?

I use Paypal and Xoom. Most of the people I work with have a Paypal account, but Xoom also offers things such as home delivery and pick up.

I dont currently have any Filipino workers, but in the past I made payments to them using Xoom and also oDesk is great if you get them to work for you on there because they can log all their hours etc. and you can see exactly what work has been done in what time etc. so if you see something is taking an unusually long time you can ask them if they need further training on the subject.

Apart from oDesk I would us PayPal.

Yes, PayPal is the best option, especially when you send them funds via PayPal's Mass Payment option.

They can validate their PayPal accounts with UnionBank's EON account, the cheapest option, but in the long run I'd advise them to get a UnionBank savings with debit card account or from another bank here which offers savings with debit card accounts - there are cheaper options than getting a UnionBank savings with debit card account though still more expensive than an EON account, but I think getting an EON account here these days takes about a couple of weeks or so.

I use Ko-Kard, the cost is 4.88, but they are slower than molasses. They issue employees a debit card (no fee). I think they make money on the float because it takes at least 7 to 10 days before the employee gets the funds. It is easy to use and you have a nice transaction record. You just have to pay at least a week in advance for them to get their funds.

Willie is right.

I use paypal, but you have to becareful. Keep receipts and transaction ID's some of these little guys, claim you have not paid when you actually have, so make sure you send them payments and transaction statements so they can not prove you are wrong.
